Shavers came closer to drop Ali then Foreman.Ron Lyle said Shavers was harder puncher and Ali said same thing.Muhammad Ali told he hit him so hard,he shook his kin folk in Africa. "Lyle hit about the same as Foreman. Shavers hit harder than Lyle and Foreman put together." - Leroy Caldwell. "Shavers. No question. At least with Foreman I was able to get up. When Shavers hit me I went down and stayed down." - Ken Norton when asked who hit harder. "Oooh man, that man is always with me. He hit so hard, the hardest. I still feel his punches today." - Jimmy Young on Shavers "Shavers hit me so hard it felt like needles were jabbing the back of my head. Without hesitation, Shavers was the hardest puncher I met." - Ron Lyle on Shavers. These are words from famous fighters who fought or spared with Shavers and Foreman.
Shavers sure didn't take the punches of Quarry very well... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHHu8fdiaew[/ame]
tyson in a flash. seperate levels. shavers was as game as they come, always came to fight (and he would here) but Tyson was too fast. shavers was so comited to his own punch hed walk onto something he wouldnt see coming prety quick.
No love for Shavers eh? Judging by the majority of the posts in this thread, why don't we just call Earnie an amateur boxer that doesn't belong in the same ring with Tyson. What a joke! Seriously folks, Ali, Holmes, Norton, Lyle, and Jimmy Young all have said Shavers was the hardest puncher they ever faced. This must be taken into consideration and I don't think Tyson wipes the floor with Shavers in one round. Not happening IMO. I think Shavers could drop Tyson a couple of times but I'm leaning towards Tyson by KO somewhere in the middle rounds. Earnie actually had some skill to go with his power and wouldn't just fold in one round prime for prime against Tyson.
Punch for Punch Shavers probably hitted harder..the point is who would enter first.. Prime Tyson, I say.
While Shaver's power is something to behold, I don't give him much of a chance, outside of perhaps a lucky punch, which frankly can be said for any fighter in any matchup. Earnie faired well against boxers, but fell short against men who could hit or managed to get the better of him on the inside. That describes Tyson to a "T". Mike's handspeed and two fisted attack trumps anything that men like Quarry, Lyle, Cobb or Mercado had to offer, all of whom scored stoppages against Earnie. While its true that neither Tyson nor Shavers had the most solid whiskers of all time, Tyson at least survived the power of men like Frank Bruno, James Smith, and Razor Ruddock, whereas Shavers never survived the onslought of a serious hitter.
you need to watch the final round mate, where Ali kicked his ass and had Shavers out on his feet, stumbling around the ring. Shavers did well, but no way deserved a decision
I don't. Tubbs was more skilled than Earnie. He didn't hit as hard but in terms of pure skill set I give TNT the edge. As far as the actual fight, it may very well end around the same time that Tubbs lasted with Tyson. First off, he's not a mythical figure out of a story book. And secondly for all that power you'd imagine that at some point he'd win a belt from an aging Muhammad Ali or he'd beat Ron Lyle, Jerry Quarry or Larry Holmes. But he didn't. His power got him there but his skill set was simply not enough. You don't beat Tyson with power and when you look at his losses it's not even a prerequisite. The hardest punchers that Tyson faced barring Lewis couldn't beat him. Ali was obviously a showman and yes there are account from many sources that cite Shavers as being a bigger puncher than Foreman but in this particular case I'm trying to see the relevance. Yes he hits hard. Doesn't matter. Tyson KO2 I think it's a matter of consensus that Tyson beats Shavers but I don't think Shavers was amateur level. He was a professional, a good fighter but by no means a great fighter. Shavers punched hard, I for one certainly don't doubt that. But his ability is frankly limited. He is a deliberate fighter; Tyson eats those guys up. It's part of the reason why I pick Tyson over Foreman. Shavers doesn't have the kind of defense that will keep Tyson from landing. And his power notwithstanding he lacks the offensive output that Tyson brings to the table. Tyson was an offensive juggernaut. It was the reason why he was able to beat a wide range of styles and the reason why he was successful in his career. Tyson beating Shavers is simply a matter of styles. Shavers brings nothing to table that can make me or many others who've commented that he can beat Mike Tyson. He has the power to land the proverbial lucky punch but other than that he's toast.
