I would favor a prime Charles over Marciano, Jefferies, and Johnson. I see close fights with Baer, Schmeling, Tunney, and Dempsey. He get beaten by Louis and Liston. And he gets obliterated by Tyson, Foreman, Lewis, Holmes, Liston, Holyfield, Frazier, and Ali.
I remember reading Liston trained with Charles whe Liston was younger, and at some Liston fight Charles was quoted criticizing Liston didn't know how to throw a right hand.
This. Charles criticized Liston in several of his fights, but he was most critical of Liston in the first Ali fight. Charles gave Liston credit for his strength and jab, but said Liston was also clumsy and one dimensional. "Like so many other fight fans, former heavyweight king Ezzard Charles believes a champion should show more courage, more class and more determination than the ordinary run-of-the-mill punch thrower." "A hurt shoulder is not a pleasant thing for any athlete." admitted the quiet-spoken, mild-mannered Charles, "but it's not as painful as a badly cut eye or a lot of other things, Liston should have come out for the seventh round, ducking, bobbing and weaving and still giving Clay trouble." "Actually, I never had too high an opinion of Liston as a fighter. He was a sparring partner of mine in 1954 and was as clumsy as he was tough. His only claim to fame was the quick job he did twice on Floyd Patterson and Patterson blew his title because he was afraid. Clay proved Liston doesn't take too much beating." https://i.imgur.com/jmgNSqK.jpg Joe Louis, who at one time was an advisor to Liston also said Liston didn't use his right hand properly. "Liston punches with his left hand about as hard as anybody I've ever seen," Louis analyzed while the current champion worked with his spar mate. "But he's a little clumsy yet and he doesn't use his right hand properly." "Liston throws a long right hand," he continued. "He don't quite judge just right when he throws it and he's not close enough when he does. That's what we're trying to work on. He uses it a little too soon instead of waiting until he gets in close." https://i.imgur.com/gBB3dJJ.jpg Whitehurst was also critical of Liston's right hand and pointed out the same flaws that Louis would point out several years later. "Sonny Liston could be a great fighter, but he has such a powerful left he drives you so far back with it he can't hit you with the right." https://i.imgur.com/OVF7KNL.jpg
