Patterson UD. I think Toney will struggle to time counters with Floyd's hand speed and also his ability to quickly slip in and out of range. His jab can keep Toney off balance from setting his right hand counters aswell and I think he'll find it difficult to sneak it in around Patterson's left hook.
Patterson would annihilate Toney by one sided decision. Think of a much faster, much more powerful, much more technical Jirov in there. Look what Patterson did to Archie Moore, who even in 1956, was a better fighter than James Toney.
First off, Maricano is slow. Patterson is incredibly fast. Not just in his hands, but overall body. That's a big problem for Toney. Watch how Roy handled him and how Jirov fought him. Marciano comes forward, Patterson does as well, but he can also box and move. Marciano throws wide. Patterson is sharp and precise with pin-point accuracy. Patterson throws fast, sharp, powerful combinations in angles that is hard to see. Marciano not so much. That said, I favored Marciano all along but I was making my point that I didn't favor Rocky knocking out Toney. That was what I was debating. In this thread, I didn't say Patterson is winning by KO. I don't know. I don't favor it either.
Rojo I been following your posts for years and I have to ask you, why do you even bother posting in the classic section?
He was better in many aspects and can cause trouble to fighters in different ways. Where Moore had to be beaten down by Rocky, Patterson's abilities allowed him to take him out quicker. Different opponents can have different outcomes for each. Sometimes it would favor Rocky and other times it could favor Patterson. With Marciano, he had that ability to continually beat an opponent all through the fight. Patterson, not so much. He would box. He could be a boxer, he could be a fighter. Marciano, a person that would try to take your heart and take you out. You do wonder however, like Ali brought up, had that been a young Ezzard Charles, a young Joe Louis, a young Archie Moore, a young Jersey Joe Walcott...would it have been different? Against a younger, prime fighter....boxing may be more helpful then just a relentless attack.
