It says that in 81 fights George had an off night. Meanwhile Joe had 20 (or so) bad nights out of 70.

    Levels, bro.

Floyd Patterson was built to destroy an era Walcott struggled mightily in.

Are we taking the best version of each fighter, or the best version of one versus the worst version of another?

And plus, Walcott lost to a miniature, slower, less athletic, poorer balanced, worse boxer version of Foreman... TWICE!

Patterson gets too much credit for the Maxim showing because Maxim is thought to be Latin, due to his Italian heritage, and Latins are thought to be good fighters. HOWEVER, the arc of the moral universe is long and bends toward justice. Maxim is short for Maximbriardinellius, etymologically speaking. This name was from the Oscan word for "Maximum briar thorn damage fatality." A type of finishing move only done in...you guessed it, Samnium. He was not Latin, but a Samnite. Samnites were not good fighters. That is marketing hype. They were mostly good at doing the hunka-chunka.

I voted Walcott; but I understand why somebody would pick against him due to how inconsistent his career was: losing a third of his fights and becoming champion only after repeated failed tries is outright journeyman stuff.

    But I still pick Walcott.
