Prime for prime: Andre Ward vs Joe Calzaghe?

maybe I should have said "when did joe fight a top 5 p4p guy who was still in his physical prime/early 30s"?

 

This is a very tricky matchup to predict as both have the tools to neutralise the other, and the heart and ring iq to do whatever it takes to win.

My gut says Calzaghe takes it on a razor thin decision, but he'll need to fight out of his skin and throw more punches than he's ever done in his career to do it. Ward will need to play the role of matador and I just don't think a whirlwind like Calzaghe can really be controlled unless you have the power to knock him out. Even if Ward manages to shut him down in stretches, he'll just keep coming, and sooner or later that type of pressure (more of a mental than a physical pressure) has to break you down.

 

What do you think is Kovalevs best win on paper? Many feel it is Hopkins. Do you deny this?

Tied yourself up again as Ward at SMW didnt fight any top SMWs that were in their physical prime. Kessler was early 30s but past physical prime and suffering vision problems, Froch was in his 35th year and arguably fatigued with having been on the road so much.
So basically Kovalev is arguably in your opinion the only physically prime opponent Ward has faced and that was a very debatable decision
