Did this a few years back but I thought I'd see what the more recent additions to the site think of this one. I see a pretty close bout going the distance with Jimmy grinding out a win.
Yeah I don't see Young walking into Quarry's counters and quite frankly he might even force Jerry to chase him - something that he wasn't used to doing. Jimmy was hard as hell to land flush on and I see virtually no chance of Quarry getting a stoppage. I might lean towards Young by a decision in what would likely be a dull fight.
This would be one of the most frustrating experiences of Jerry's life. Young would win a lopsided decision...Jerry would be punching air all night.
If Quarry could land a 'big one' early in a round he might have a chance but I see this as a bad matchup for him. As my late friend once said: "Young doesn't hit hard, but he hits hard enough to keep the sluggers off of him for the most part." If he didn't have a bit of a wallop, everyone would have walked right thru him and the big boys didn't. And?...as much as I loved Jerry, how many 'top' contenders did he stop? Shavers? (an anomoly IMO) Don't bring up Mac Foster. Jerry was a textbook counterpuncher (along with Galindez) you could write a book on their technique, but Jerry couldn't really box a lick. Heck, even Chuvalo was jabbing him in 69 (Don Dumphey: "where'd Chuvalo get that jab!") This thread reminds me of the Final bout in the elimination tournament in 67-68 after Ali got exiled. Ellis-Quarry, Oakland, CA Spring 68. Jimmy wanting the action in the middle of the ring, Jerry wanting it on the ropes. What...a...snoozefest unfortunately. Prime Jimmy Young cops a UD on prime Jerry. My $0.02
Have to see it this way also, but can't agree with Jerry not being able to box a lick. Countering as he was able was boxing and when in great shape he threw every punch besides a jab with skill and timing.
I think Young by decision. Young loved to counterpunch. He would make Quarry lead then make him pay. Jerry's lack of D would provide plenty of openings.
I always liked both of these guys, but I would have to go with Jimmy Young to win the decision in a dull bout. As long as a bout was going Quarry's way he would look great, but when he was getting frustrated he tended to deflate. Young had the style to frustrate anyone, Quarry included. Jerry liked to counterpunch and I believe Young would force him to lead, leading to stretches that would be a replay of the Quarry-Ellis fight. I believe Quarry's best chance would be to make a supreme effort to land on Jimmy early and hurt him. Not easily done. I pick Young by decision and no call for a rematch.
