In 1983 Marvis Frazier solidly outpointed Bugner comfortably. Supposing it was the 1973 Bugner, who his dad fought, that Marvis had to contend with. What would have occurred ? Unless Bugner went to sleep,I could see him easing his way to a points verdict over Frazier jr.

Bugner was really known for his losses more than his wins. I think Joe was a good boxing big man for the time and could move a bit. Marvis had a few good wins in a short career in a very weak era and a vast amateur career. I dont think either man would be as successful today but Prime for prime Bugner could pull it out, he was better over all

Well it depends.. Are we considering all the weight training and all the new calorie plans that the new fighters have? It seems like that the fighters today are even bigger then they were in the past...
But I seriously think that Bugner would outpoint Marvis, he would have to keep his hands busy though.

I like Marvis (Its a PHILLY thing!), but this would be a tough test. Bugner gets very little mention on these boards and probably deservedly so. he was a very good boxer in a great era. he was a very good defensive fighter and marvis would not fare as well as his Pop, who also had a hard time with Bugner!

    bugner 7-5/9-6 type decision

Two of my favorite fighters! Bugner was tough as nails - only time he was knocked out in an 80+ fight career was in his very first fight! Marvis, on the other hand, was very underrated (talk about being remembered more for your losses than your wins - remember Holmes and Tyson?). He really was a very skillful fighter and except for one infamous big right hand from Larry Holmes could have been the champ (watch the Frazier vs. Holmes fight very carefully; Marvis blocked, ducked, or slipped nearly every one of Larry's first 50 odd punches in the first two and a half minutes. Holmes was so frustrated that he couldn't hit Frazier that he grabbed him three times and tried to throw him across the ring, then repeatedly stuck his open glove in Marvis's face).
Now back to the question of Joe Bugner vs. Marvis Frazier in their prime. Joe: bigger, stronger, yet fast and TOUGH! Weaknesses? Maybe no big knockout punch. Marvis: Small for a heavyweight, but quick hands, gritty, smart. Also no big punch but takes opponents out with combinations.
Unless Bugner gets lucky in the first round (like Larry), it's going to be a decision, maybe a split decision. I like them both but I'll have to go with Marvis. Boy would I love to see that fight!
