When they fought in 1973,Ken was slightly past prime and Jim had yet to reach his. How about the Buchanan who beat Ismael Laguna v the incarnation of Watt who outboxed Howard Davis? I see Ken scoring a narrow yet decisive points verdict.
I see the same, Steve. Ken on a slightly different level for me, but Jim was a bloody good fighter too.
I read a story once about the time when Buchanan and Watt were at some dinner and Ken asked Jim why he did n't fight Roberto Duran. Jim replies "Because I'm not ****ing mad!"
I thought Watt found Buchanan out a bit style wise. I think Buchanan would win because there’s that class gap but I don’t think Ken would like it.
It's amazing how the mind can play tricks on you. My initial thoughts were that Buchanan was, essentially, from an earlier era than Watt. I am sure that is related to when they were world champions. When I just looked at their records I found that Kenny is just a couple of years older and that Watt actually retired before Buchanan finally did. I would have bet a ton of money against that. As far as a bout between the two, Buchanan is a level or two above Watt and while I don't think he stops Watt, he would take a hard fought but comfortable decision.
Buchanan wins clearly. It’s fair to say that he was more up for their fight as he had something to prove and it was a step down to the world title fights and big US shows he’d been on in the months and years prior. Watt was tough as hell and appeared to know how to fight him though. Their fight is one of my favorite fights to be honest.
How did Ken fare against southpaws in general? I know Watt beat him and Charlie Nash. Could be that he had trouble with lefties. I’ll go with Watt narrowly, with a Glasgow Kiss headbutt opening Ken like a melon and him being troubled by the cut in the second half of the fight.
Buchanan at his best was a great fighter and no disrespect to Jim but he was not on Ken`s level.Buchanan by a fairly wide points decision
