man, its obvious that you are a fan, but top 5 atg? no offense man, i ain't really a joe hater nor a big fan either but he can't be that high. and a sidenote, i don't know if ballet was an unconscious blip thing when it comes to jc.:yep
I don't buy a lot of this "prime for prime" talk a lot of people use. You are what you are as your career unfolds and you're shown to be. When a fighter gets beat or embarrassed in a way that's completely unexpected, it's usually because he wasn't as good a fighter as people thought he was to begin with. I'd have to put Roy below both Hopkins and Calzaghe given the way he was so utterly embarrassed and outclassed in several of his losses. Calzaghe and Hopkins were never outclassed like that, win or lose, no matter what stage of their career they were in. Roy did beat Hops in their lone meeting early in their careers, but Hops has done so markedly better against common opponents that I'd have to rank him above Roy. At best, Roy can only claim to have Hopkins' number, but their respective careers showed him to be not the better fighter.
that is pretty much the story of this thread. except for one who thought jc should be on top. i was actually expecting a more evened out competition between the three since the brits/welsh would be batting for JC. but it seems to be not the case.
. ouch. that hurts bro. especially for the calzaghe fans here. really, me thinks he could have evened out the score here if he only fought outside of UK in those years he reigned. to be an ATG for me really is to be worldclass. beating world class competition. this i think is the undoing of JC.
are calzaghe fans, the good thing is that he could be the best 168 pounder for more than a century... same as galaxy, almost 50 years now and no one came close..maybe Vic Darchinyan but i guess he would not came close..donaire would beat him in the near future. plus VD is old already
Fair points. But Think about this. By your reasoning, Ali was exposed as poor in his last two fights, losing to Holmes and Berbick. Or did he just stay too long ? Most folks believe the latter. Now, imagine how Jones' career would have been viewed had he retired after Ruiz. Titles from middle to heavy. Clear decisive win over Hops. A shutout over Toney. A defeat of Holy's daddy, WBA champ Ruiz. Roy, like a number of others in the game, didn't know when to go. Calzaghe would always have been a tough fight for him, tougher than Bernard or Toney. But the Jones of the late nineties would have prevailed over Joe, IMO.
