Even Jackie Kid Berg ,were he alive ,would say he wasn't as good as Ted Kid Lewis...Of course Lewis was at his greatest as a welterweight...But both fighters had unlimited stamina...Ted Kid Lewis is seldom mentioned on ESB, but whoever saw him had him in the 5 top welterweights of alltime, and possibly Britain's greatest boxer. A dynamo who had more than 280 fights...cheers

BB, I still say Len Harvey IS Britain's Greatest Ever fighter.

his overall career and the sum of it. Never held a world title, but that's secondary to all that he did achieve in dominance over 3 weights and 15 years.

Len Harvey should be the poster boy for British boxers IMHO.

Lewis would win this , kid Lewis is Britain's best fighter and would defeat berg

Berg's prime was short but he fought at whirlwind pace but the bigger Lewis would meet him head on and win , in this case the bigger man is the better man

Both were great , but Lewis would be allover "Yiddle" like a rash, too strong for the talented Berg he would stop him after the halfway stage.

    I don't know mcvey,

consider as I've said many times, those fighters who proved themselves in greater times are secured for all time. top fighters from lesser periods are the ones who have to be measured against those times & fighters, not the other way around.

so though I understand your referring to Harvey's "defensive" style, in lesser times he is riding high (already proved by his greater time), and would be Champion & Contenders with loads of followers, and lets not forget at least one significant "present fact"...

Bernard Hopkins - Loved & Hated, but still a Top man with lots of draw...

Defensive just like Len, no diff, so I think Harvey would have the drawing capacity as much and probably more given he is/was an overall better fighter than Hopkins!

Len Harvey, like B Hop relied on his opponent to make the gate. I'm not questioning his ability, just his drawing power which was abysmal.

To say Harvey was a better overall fighter than Hopkins is contentious to say the least. Harvey did little at world level. He had three fights in the US losing them all and the two men that beat him there , Dundee and Jeby ,would not be classed as great champions.
I had a holiday in Exmouth as a kid over 50 years ago now, the B&B I stayed in was run by a nice couple, the husband had fought Harvey.

Cool do you have memories of what he said about him?

Drawing power abysmal (?), Harvey & McAvoy had approx. 90,000 spectators at Whitecity. he filled everywhere he fought in Britain, so what's abysmal about that.

you must be referring to his stay in the US and it was more the unknown quantity than Harvey himself.

lastly, yes! FAR better than BHop, Harvey a smaller man fought in Heavier divisions and BHop has a good few victories to fighters from lower divisions than middle even.

as I've said; in the balance with todays Hype, Media, Paydays & B ull S hit, Harvey would have had plenty of coverage and crowds the same as any other top fighter today.

Think it was 80,000 ,and they came for Jock . Here they are at Harringay.

Reg Gutteridge said Harvey's style turned off the public, and he should know he used to look after his robe while his father seconded Len.

Ted "Kid" Lewis was significantly greater than Len Harvey, in my opinion.
Not that Len Harvey wasn't a great fighter in his own right, but I do also belive Ted Lewis was the greatest British fighter ever.
