Prime for prime Trevor Berbick v Frank Bruno

Coetzee came to London just for a pay day,he was flabby and 17 lbs over his best weight,Bruno never beat TOP TEN GUY.Berbick beat several.

 

I would agree, with hindsight, Coetzee was only there for the money. But going into the Bruno bout Coetzee was a top ten fighter.

Also McCall was a top ten fighter, when Bruno beat him.

I agree with you guys, Berbick beats The Bomber, but you are not being honest, if you say Bruno never beat a top ten ranked fighter, as he did.... twice!

 

I think Bruno punched just as hard as any boxer who stopped Berbick and I don't think that Berbick had the defence skill to avoid Bruno's punches all night long. But even if Berbick fought a cautious fight and didn't get hit too much, he wouldn't be in a position to be winning rounds.

I thought Holmes won almost every round against Berbick, by the way.

 

Did anyone see the fight between Carl Williams and Trevor Berbick?? can any information from this fight mean anything when comparing the Bruno-Berbick fight as Williams was a common opponent for both men.....

 

In 61 fights , Berbick was stopped twice ,once in his 12 fight by Bernado Mercado ,when he was caught cold in the first round,and once by Tyson when he fought a stupid fight, trying to outmacho Tyson.
Bruno was a heavy clubbing puncher ,but slow and his combinations were non existant ,he was a manufactured fighter,and VERY carefully matched.
Berbick would NOt be caught with that clubbing right imo.Its not about power ,its about the ability to deliver it.I saw Berbick fight a journeyman ,Mark White in London,he was better defensively than given credit for imo.Berbick decisioned Thomas and |Page ,both vastly better boxers than Bruno.

 

Ive discussed Coetzee, when he came past me to the ring his breasts were jiggling ,he was out of shape and unmotivated.
McCall ,I will give you ,but if the fight had been 15 rds, Bruno would have lost he was rapidly running out of gas.

 

What about Bruno's left hook, which hurt Tyson? One is doing Bruno a great disservice if one regards him as a one-handed fighter.

I also don't remember Berbick being particularly fast.

Would you agree that, if Berbick beat Bruno, he would be the worst fighter ever to do so?

It kind of puts them in the same category really with Bruno having the height and power advantage, and it would be an advantage given their boxing styles. Its still a hard fight to call because of the exhaustion factor, thats why I say the further Berbick makes it in the fight, the better his chances to win.

 

Berbick had a fairly solid chin, and was only stopped twice in rather long career - Once in only his 11th pro fight against a big puncher, and again when he was past his prime against a peak Tyson. His stamina was far more proven than Bruno's was as well. He went the distance to beat prime versions of Page, Thomas, and also went 15 with peak Holmes. I think he was more durable than Bruno and had better skills. My thinking is that he wears Frank down to stop him late.

 

I'd like to know how or why Berbick lost to Renaldo Snipes and S.T.Gordon in back-to-back fights in the midst of his prime years ?

I never said Bruno was one handed.I said he was slow and manufactured ,which he was imo.Bruno momentarily stunned a sloppy Tyson ,caught him coming in ,but didnt follow it up,which high lights my point .How many rounds did Bruno win against Tyson in two fights?
Berbick or Smith would be the worst fighters to beat Bruno imo.

Bruno became champion after multiple chances if he had been American I doubt he would have got them,he beat one of the worst champions ever and was in danger of running out of gas before the fight finished.

 

I just watched the complete Berbick-Snipes fight. What a war !
Snipes fought a heck of a fight and deserved the decision but it was close. Snipes was definitely one of the top fighters in the early 80s, but dont know what happened to him. After he lost to Greg Page in 1983, he lost to Alfredo Evangelista and Ricky Parkey and was never a serious contender again though often an exciting fighter.

The heavyweights of the 1980s were underrated, so were the fights they put on.

Frank Bruno punched awfully hard and had a wicked jab, he might have outpointed even the best Berbick in a 10-rounder but he might have crumbled at the last minute, Berbick was just as strong as him and might have been too much pressure. I cannot see Bruno winning over 12 or 15 rounds though at all.

 

I don't really know about descriptions of Berbick as "skilled".

When I saw this match-up, the Thunder vs. Berbick fight popped into my head. Any of you remember when Berbick was attempting a title run in the 90's, a lot of which aired on USA's Tuesday Night Fight's? I miss that show. Holmes and Duran were also frequent main eventers.

I realize Berbick was a decade past his best, but Thunder was never a fighter of Bruno's caliber. I still think it's a reasonable comparison. Thunder outpointed Berbick in that fight. I think Bruno will be doing the same, but I have doubts about Bruno making it the distance. Oliver McCall may have a better chin than Berbick, but McCall was not as strong as Berbick. McCall didn't keep pressing forward all fight long, as Berbick would try to do.

I can see a few outcomes. Bruno could hit very hard. It is not out of the realm of possibility for him to stop an oncoming Berbick. That is the least likely of realistic outcomes in my opinion.

Bruno could win a decision. That is a little more likely than the last scenario.

Berbick could win by stoppage. I think this is slightly more likely, though not much, than Bruno by decision. Bruno would be way ahead on the cards after 10, maybe 7-3 in rounds; but his stamina would start to really fail him hear.
