Both undersized heavyweights from 2 distant eras. Does Moorer overwhelm Tunney with his Offensive ****nal, or does Tunney take Moorer to school worse than he did Dempsey?

Anyone? Moorer is the bigger man here, but Tunney was a master of taking advantage of an opponents weakness. Could he crack Moorers chin?

Tunney was the better fighter and the better heavyweight. It's just a matter if you believe Moorer's size and weight advantage are too much for Gene to overcome. Gene far more focused in the ring too.

I think Tunney would have neatly outboxed Moorer. MM didn't carry his 175 lb power to heavyweight, and he wasn't busy enough, or fast enough to give Gene that many problems, and I think Tunney could have troubled Moorer, on the other hand, with his accurate punching, especially the right hand. Tunney was the superior fighter here and would have won a clear points verdict IMO.

Hard to say. Tunney never fought a Southpaw. Or a prime power-puncher. Or even a Black fighter for that matter.

Moorer has the better defence, a very solid southpaw jab and more weight behind his shots and an explosive Steward powerpuncher. Tunney was much lighter, fought with low hands and wasn't any quicker. Got to favour Moorer.

Tell that to Cooper, Jirov, Stewart and Botha.

Moorer does not in any way have a better defense than Gene Tunney. Gene was a master boxer while Moorer was far from it. Gene befuddles the plodding Moorer with a U decision win.

Tunney wins every round, and is not troubled or shaken by Moorer even once. And this is coming from someone who holds a higher opinion of Moorer than most do.

Moorer has a better defense than Tunney? Tunney isn't any quicker than Moorer?
Tunney had much better wheels, better judge of distance, better chin as well. I guess prime Ali didn't have as good of a defense as Moorer either since he kept his hands low too.
I'll take the guy that defeated Risko, Gibbons, Heeney and Dempsey 2x at heavy.
The southpaw stance is a legit concern but I think Tunney a brilliant strategist would be able to solve the differences.
Tunney is clearly the better fighter.

The key mofifier there is prime. Dempsey was a tad past his best.

Yes. But power is the last thing a fighter looses.

Yes and no one should know that better than Michael Moorer.
