I'm pretty sure he said THE hardest puncher he'd faced, which is telling considering how short the fight was. I think he then added Ron Lyle was a close 2nd. Imagine if Tommy threw a big hook to the head at the same time as Gerry threw a hook to the body. I think the ring would explode.
I don't mean to take the thread off course here but, what does that question have to do with whether or not Quarry could beat Cooney?
Both men were early round fighters. Both had extreme power particularly in their left. Neither was much for taking it. Cooney had height and reach. Morrison might have been a tad stronger. While both guys built their records on aged or mediocre fighters, the tie breaker for me is that Morrison sometimes struggled With or even lost to such opposition. Cooney didn’t. I narrowly pick Gerry to win by stoppage, but in truth it’s anyone’s fight.
Morrison. Cooney was too soft. When you get tkod by Michael Spinks, you know that boxing is not for you. Morrison aside from his glass jaw has been in many brutal fights and had the stomach for attrition. If he can avoid getting tagged by Coney, he will find a home for his left hook
