In fantasy fights how would Hagler have fared v all of Calzaghe`s opponents at 168 and 175lbs considering people often wondered if Hagler should have moved up and fought Spinks and that B-Hop and Jones were at the tale end of their careers when they fought Joe? Who was Calzaghe`s best opponent at 175?
Well considering Zags only fought twice at 175 and one of them was a shell of RJJ, his best at 175 was Hopkins easily. It's hard to be objective with Hagler because he's such an ATG, but he wasn't massive at 160 - I believe on fight night he was pretty much bang on the weight, so I think the size of a few of Cazaghe's best wins might have given Hagler a few issues - but not enough to make me think Hagler loses perse. The toughest fights for Hagler on Calz's resume IMO:- 1) Hopkins - Hopkins vs Hagler would be something to see, style makes fights and I think that Hopkins is as bad a match up for Marvin as there is. Hopkins SD 2) Mikkel Kessler - if we swapped out the Kessler that lost to Calz at Millenium Stadium for Hagler, I have a hard time scoring that. 50/50 toss up with Marvin struggling with the size and power of Kessler, but Kessler struggling with the skills and will of Hagler the later the fight goes. Toss up for me, Hagler SD. 3) Chris Eubank Snr - obviously well past prime against a green (but heavy-handed) Calzaghe, Eubank was still hard hitting, with a granite chin. But he did not have the killer instinct he had pre-Watson. Hard to see past a Hagler decision. 4) Charles Brewer - IMO an underrated scalp on JC's resume, and it should have been a unification after brewer was TWICE robbed by Ottke in Germany. Brewer hit hard and could go at it for 12 as shown in a great fight with Calz, he would also have been quite a bit bigger than Marvin on fight night, but Hagler would just be that bit too good for Brewet 5) Not really one of Joe's best names, but Sakio Bika is a tough night's work for anyone - even Ward struggled with a well past prime and inactive Bika. Physically VERY strong rough and awkward, this would have been an tough one for Marvin, but again I think he tough's it out for a UD. That would be the 5 I think that would be toughest fights for Marvin, but only Hopkins and Kesser really trouble the 160 ATG IMO.
The only way Eubank would have stood a chance v Hagler was that he was naturally bigger and Hagler might not have carried the extra 8 pounds very well, but Eubank would have to be at his very best to stand any sort of chance v Marvin, he was awesome.
