I think a prime DLH gives any welter in history a good fight. Give me a good reason why you think otherwise.
33 year old Hopkins couldn't stop Vanderpool and took 22 rounds to take out Echolls, but would 'probably' knock out Calzaghe who has never been on the floor for longer than about 3 seconds. Ok.
That's not really the issue, considering that it's his status as a victim at middleweight that is at question.
We will never know for sure, but FACT is Calzaghe BEAT Hopkins when BHOP got the balls to get in the ring with him. JC was openly after him and RJJ for years, and why wouldn't he they were big money fights for him. BHOP disgraced himself with his BS acting and faking that night. No way he wins a rematch as he will not have better cardio this time around.
De La Hoya was a fantastic welterweight and a good light middle but we are comparing them as challengers to the middleweight title...De Lahoya won his first pro world title at super feather and was clearly too small when he fought Hopkins. SRL and Hearns were fantastic welters - but they started at welter, both were more comfortable at 160 than Oscar and have more credentials at middleweight and above middleweight. A h2h dicussions featuring a 147lb LDH and 147lb Hearns and Ray Leonard is a different thread, though im comfortable in picking Oscar to lose both matches.
No it is the issue if you read the thread properly. JC was trying to suggest Leonard and Hagler were far superior fighters to DLH which, vicariously, qualifies them as top 160 fighters.
Depends on your definition of 'after'. It's fair to say that Calzaghe was 'after' RJJ in the same way that Dawson is after Calzaghe now. He certainly talked a lot about him. Didn't do much to actually go get the fight though. Neither did Jones, but I doubt he felt compelled to.
I'm reluctant to get into this again but I feel compelled to because of the sycophantic way in which Joe Calzaghe is being eulogised by the mainstream media. People that have not given boxing any acknowledgement and who don't really know the sport. RJJ was the undisputed champion and pound for pound number one fighter in the world 5/6 years ago when Joe was the WBO belt holder in the division below. If Joe had wanted to he could have taken a risk, gotten a ranking with one of the three organisations, and forced a fight with Jones. For whatever reason, he chose not to.
Yes and in the same mould i would take Kessler, Lacy and Reid over Hakkar, Allen and Joppy:yep He fought Winky at 170lbs when Winky is a 154/160 fighter. He fought Pavlik at 170lbs when Pavlik is a 160 fighter. He fought Tito at 160 when Tito is a naturally much smaller fighter He fought DLH at 160 when DLH should have lost against Sturm in his previous fight. Hopkins was head and shoulders above all the other middleweights (until Taylor came along), just as Calzaghe was head and shoulders above the 168 division.
