Toney's the BADDEST MF in the street you ever saw, J. He follows the rules in the ring. Outside of it, all bets are off.

The Spinks brothers took up boxing in part because they were getting their asses kicked on the mean streets of East St. Louis. Either would be a strong candidate for being least effective in a street fight while prime. (Don't forget that each was crushed in a single round while very close to prime.) Michael said after Holmes I that the last time he and Leon had a fraternal squabble, big brother got the better of it. Leon lost his teeth an an early sparring session, when a tough butted him in the face. It shows how bad Leon was when he started, for him to have led with his head like that.

Ali did clean up in some street fighting after winning his Gold Medal, something he has talked about on camera. Concerning Lennox, has everybody forgotten the retaliatory swing his took at Tyson when Mike went after him in that pre-fight melee?

Burns was too close to the bare knuckle era for me to even contemplate naming him as vulnerable. Tommy carried opponents so as not to cheat the fans of their money's worth, but he did blast out Roache and Squires at breakneck speed.

In the NBA, some of the most dangerous and feared street fighters are the smallest men on the court. When 6'8" 230 pound Kermit Washington sucker punched Rudy Tomjanovich, Rudy T's teammate, 5'9" 159 pound Calvin Murphy was ready to kill Washington. Murphy, a former Golden Gloves boxer, had been in 17 full fledged fights on the court, and had never lost. In the best known episode, Calvin grabbed hold of the afro of the Celtics 6'8" Sidney Wicks, pulled him to the ground, and beat the **** out of him. To a certain extent, I liken Tommy Burns to Calvin Murphy.

Johnson did quite alright. I'm not saying Burns wasn't tough, I'm sure he was as tough as nails, but he should be easier to grapple with than giants like Lewis and Wlad. Easier to get in close with, as well.

Apparently, if you know the slightest modicum of wrestling (basic takedown techniques) you can beat him.

Yeah, a boxer generally holds an advantage against a "normal guy", certainly a heavyweight boxer, and so does any elite strong athlete or even a recreational bodybuilder. Generally.

But we're comparing heavyweight champions to heavyweight champions, so what exactly have we got to go on ?

Him and Michael grew up in a bad neighborhood but Leon started boxing because he was the area's punching bag. I doubt all of those teeth are missing from street fights, Leon does not seem like the type to really care to go to the dentist.

Agreed, and quite frankly, I think both of those men knew as much about throwing down in a street brawl as anyone whoever put on boxing gloves. I read an article about 20 years ago, that interviewed Michael Spinks. And he actually talked about his experiences growing up in St Louis, and some of the fights he and Leon were in.. Its been so long, that I don't remember all the details, but he said that they both bailed each other out quite a few times.

as a kid i'm assuming though? He was never a Heavyweight as a kid, i'm guessing. And i doubt he was being used as a punching bag after coming one.

i was making the point that if a fella looks busted up with few teeth left, it would indicate that he's maybe a fighter that got beat more than he won.
