This is a really tough one. It's hard to see Holmes going thru without some very rocky moments, and Tyson is a great finisher. However an ancient Holmes lasted a long time (considering Tyson's form and early fury and Holmes age AND rustiness) in their actual encounter and he was not even as good as he was after this fight due to inactivity. Even then he was shyte compared to what he was, he was actually shyte by the time Spinks beat him 2 years earlier tho he should have won the rematch. I think peak Holmes would jab, move, pump the right hand and generally keep Tyson at bay early. He would also have the threat of his excellent right cross as well as a really good uppercut present. He'd cop some big shots but his experience and powers of recuperation would hold him in good stead i think. I could see him frustrating Tyson and wearing him as the rounds went by. I think the fight would settle into a predictable flow, Tyson coming forward and looking to land the big blow but Holmes as wary as he is skilful pumping the jab, tying Tyson up when needed and generally outpointing him. I'm not convinced Holmes would stop him, it took plenty of accumlation from BIG men to stop Tyson and i think Holmes would be safety first throughout the bout. Holmes narrow but comfortable UD12 or wider UD over 15.
Lasted a long time ? Holmes spoiled and tried to survive but the moment he opened up he was laid out. If he would have come out aggressively right from the start most likely it would have ended up as a first or second round KO. Prime or old Holmes, Tyson will always land the straight right and despite Larry's awesome chin and recuperative powers Tyson will not let him off the hook once he has him down, most likely a Ref TKO stoppage.
Read the bracketed part - 4 rounds was indeed a long time imo with all considered. Holmes hadn't fought in about 2 years and had been in decline for about 3 years before that. He was a sad token of what he'd once been before the 2 year layoff and when you add that 2 years of not only inactivity but aging as well on top....... Peak Holmes was an altogether different animal, not even comparable to the rusty shell Tyson fought. Holmes was actually tying Tyson up extremely effectively in close and was also getting away the odd free pot shot followed by a clinch. When Holmes first got dropped and into trouble he wasn't throwing punches and hadn't been immediately prior. He just got caught by a great right hand.
Perhaps, but it would be by accumulation. Over 15 this might happen, not sure about 12. Holyfield stopped him over 12, but Tyson was past prime and Holyfield landed a lot of heavy blows over the rounds. Lewis was a monster puncher and Tyson again past his best as was Lewis. Interesting question. I think it's unlikely but you've got me thinking.
A younger prime Holmes also may let his hands go more therefore giving Tyson more chances. It could work for him and against him. He`s gonna be sharper and faster at the same time not just looking to survive which I believe old Larry was doing once he felt Tyson.
So let me get this straight. Douglas, a bum, in every sense of the word had a style advantage against Tyson. Yet Holmes who did EVERYTHING better than Douglas is at a disadvantage? #TypicalTysonFanboyLogic.
Holmes dropped that jab and Tyson was quick enough to capitalize on this error. Could happen at any time in the bout.
if holmes has some warm up fights, he might have lasted longer or gone to points. But it would have been a hard chore indeed to get near his full tank of gas required for 12 rounds at his age by then.
