Holyfield was 6'2 208 pounds when he won the title in 1990. Quite smaller than Usyk. There are even cruiserweights that are 6'2 208 on fight night and boil down to 199 the day before to make weight. That said, I think Holyfield would, next to Usyk, be the best fighter in the division. Although, I think he would have struggled with Fury, in part because of the size difference. But it's still a winnable fight for Holyfield
Holyfield is 6' 2.5" as is Usyk. Holyfield ranged in weight at heavyweight from early at 205 to the 215 to 218 range , fluctuating based on his match up. Either way he seems far physically stronger and ripped than Usky. I also feel Evander was faster and a much bigger hitter .. Usyk is his own sort of genius and I have nothing but huge respect for him. Both men have terrific chins ... I feel Evander who took on Tyson, Bowe and Lewis would have been competitive with anyone at any era .. I think in his prime he tears up Fury or Joshua for sure ...
You can say this about many HWs who are smaller than Holyfield as well. Cruiserweight has prevented many guys smaller than Holy who'd have tested the waters at HW in earlier eras from reaching HW. Those guys could win at HW today they just will never get the chance.
I wouldn’t be surprised if many times these days crusierweights are coming in the ring at 220lbs+, middleweights usually come in 10-15lbs heavier than 160lbs, but crusierweights boiling down to 200lbs have more water weight to boil down and put back on, since they’re bigger.
Today's cruisers are the heavies of yesteryear. Even the cruiserweight version of Usyk would have been a heavyweight in the 70s and prior. And a pretty big heavyweight. And heavyweight Usyk at 6'3 220 pounds would have been a giant in the days of Louis, Liston and Ali. Today's light heavyweights would be yesteryear's 180-195 pound heavies. A guy like Machen or Henry Cooper could have boiled down to 175 and the next night enter the ring at 185-195. With day before weigh ins, that confused things. Today's welterweight is yesteryear's middleweight. I would like to see same day weigh ins so welterweights are actually welterweights, light heavyweights are light heavyweights, etc
Yes, when you look at people who were labelled or nicknamed as ‘big’, even today’s Cruiserweight a when they move up are often heavier than them. It’s the same day weigh ins combined with the fact that they moved Cruiserweight from 190lbs now to 200lbs why even big heavyweights back then would make Cruiserweight. Also, even guys like Ali would actually be average sized Cruiserweights today and Frazier may actually be slightly below average size for a Cruiser. Also, I think if they set rehydration limits for every weight, guys wouldn’t be trying to drain down, they’d only drain as much as they can afford, and will be able to put on, and they’ll fight at the weight that suits however much they put on. So if they only let you put on 4lbs after the weigh in, someone who walks around at 164lbs in shape will make weight on the day, and easily rehydrate which would also make it safer for both guys.
I think Cleveland Williams could make Cruiserweight and he was a big heavyweight back in his day. Fighters like Buddy Baer or Primo Carnera would still be heavies today but lots of heavies of Liston’s day and before could make Cruiserweight and light heavyweight.
Yes, even though Williams and Liston may be big Cruiserweights, they could certainly make it with modern day weigh ins. But I also feel like 200lbs for Crusierweight is too high, I wouldn’t call Usyk for example, a small heavyweight even today, he may be below average, but he can stand up for himself when he has to and even gets big heavyweights on the backfoot at times. I think 190lbs was the perfect weight for Cruiserweight, I don’t know why they changed it.
Usyk is 6ft 3ins at most and was 207lbs on fight night vs Hunter. You need look no further than tonights co-main event to see a bigger former CW. Okolie is 6ft 5ins and whilst I don't know of a documented fight night CW weight for him, I'd bet good money he was over 207lbs. He was 262lbs tonight, to Usyk's 227lbs.
