How would a prime Davis matchup vs the current top lightweights like Marquez, Juan Diaz, Campbell, and Katsidis?
Boxing wise Davis is a master technician and could probably hold his own against most of todays lightweights. Katsidis would have a shot because of his punch as would Marquez. Diaz and Campbell don't have the power to stop Davis but Diaz' work rate could maybe wear Davis down, but Davis is alot better boxer then Campbell and would probably be able to replicate what Campbell did to Diaz. Hell Davis would probably be a champ in todays fight game.
Watching Howard Davis pop that jab, explode with combinations, and float around the ring in the New York Golden Gloves was religious experience. Wasn't a soul sitting there that didn't think he was the second coming of Sugar Ray Robinson. -------------------------------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP6AwknmjkU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0_HOWlGD6o
he does have 25 ko's in 32 victories but those kayos were against limited opposition any good fighter he's been in there with he hasn't stopped a one. He's been taken the distance or stopped himself.
He would hang with them all, probably could beat them all, then they catch him and stop him.Probably a little worse than in his heydey.
Davis didn't have power but that wasn't the problem with him. He couldn't take a punch, he had a leaky defense and he didn't have the mentality to overcome adversity. He was one of the fastest fighter's ever though and many at lightweight would be troubled by him.
He would beat just about anyone in a one off fight. But his deficiencies would again prevent him from being a long reigning champ. The way he could embarrass guys like Katsidas and Valero would make him look p4p, HOF and ATG all rolled into one. But eventually someone will catch that chin (maybe even one of those two) and either he gets knocked out or bashed on the way to a decision loss. Dont forget Davis had some very, very good fighters to contend with when he was champion. This current crop is only so-so in comparison.
