Both about same height but max Baer is a bit heavier both very hard hitters Baer has won 15 first round knockouts out of 81 fights 68 wins 52 by knockout 13 losses 0 draws Dempsey has won 26 first round knockouts out of 83 fights 65 wins 51 by knockout 6 losses 11 draws Who wins??????
Jack Dempsey all the way. Dempsey was a very complete fighter, a murderous counterpuncher, and he was just an evil SOB. Max Baer was a tremendous puncher, but he was vulnerable to a good counterpuncher, and he didn't have a great mentality. On the other hand, just maybe Baer catches him coming in with the big one, and turns the trick...................
Dempsey every day of the week....and twice on Sunday. Faster in both hands and feet. Difficult to hit cleanly due to his bob and weave style and a better mindset for fighting. Jack would look to end this early which would mean Max had better prepare himself for 3 minutes of fighting right from the opening bell. No playing to the crowd or hitching up his shorts in between punches for Baer. The furs gonna fly early...and Max isn't coming out the winner. Jack will take him out of his comfort zone and eventually KO him. It would be a hell of a brawl while it lasts but Dempsey comes out the winner.
Best for best, Jack had a very serious hand speed advantage, and much shorter punch. Max could be psyched out, where Dempsey would be psyched up. If the Larruper made up his mind not to be taken out, but hang tough [an unlikely scenario], there's still no way he outhustles and outscores Jack in a distance contest. Max needed space to unload his right. He wouldn't get it from Dempsey.
Baer had an iron chin, I doubt Dempsey would stop him. If he did, it would be late, with Baer still standing. In 80 fights Baer was stopped for the count only once, against ATG Joe Louis - and even then he was still conscious and basically chose not to get up.
Dempsey had firepower comparable to Louis. I think he could crack Baer`s chin inside of 5 rounds. I see Dempsey slipping inside and ripping that left hook to Max`s chin or body. One thing you dont want is Jack Dempsey hitting you. Max Baer wasnt that hard to find.
dempsey by ko with all do respect to maxie. ive seen some footage of them sparring and dempsey had little trouble landing.
haha once again the overrated dempsey... max had problems with a sniper like joe louis, not against a crude caveman like dempsey(both men were crude), but baer was bigger, stronger, he hits harder, he has longer reach and he took a better punch, after all he was not dropped by a weak lhw like genne tuney, dempsey could win, it is not impossible, but i pick baer 60/40
does not matter if dempsey had comparable one shot power to louis because louis could land it in the target much more frequently than dempsey, he was a much better puncher and more accurate, plus louis was a much better combinaion puncher, not a left hooker who was landing very open, key factor
My impression is that Louis was a bit better KO puncher -- the sort of guy who you could feel you were hanging in there with, and next thing you know you're being sucked into the quicksand; but I think Dempsey was a bit better at flat out (pardon) beating the **** out of guys.
Dempsey by a landslide. Baer had great physical tools but fought like a rank amateur. Dempsey would exploit the wind-up rock-em, sock-em style by closing the distance and throwing short punches.
I seem to recall an article in the Ring magazine detailing an exhibition bout / public sparring session between Max (the Champ ) and a long retired Dempsey with photographs of the event, All rather respectful but as i recall Max did say that he could "Feel" a hint what it would of been like sharing a ring with the young Dempsey, I think Jack may of Forgot to Pull all his punches to let Max know no clowning liberties were to be introduced.... At their best i doubt if the erratic Max would of had the mental fortitude to stay with a Lean Mean Jack.
Joe Louis was a better puncher and more accurate than everyone. Dempsey was technically sharper than Baer. Max was a big righthand puncher and he did have size. Dempsey had better two handed power and was quicker than Max. He can bob and weave under those telegraphed shots on his way inside. Bottom line is Max Baer isnt going to be able to avoid Dempsey`s fists for very long. Jack has to look out for the big looping right and he may even get caught with it but at the end of the day the clean shots are going to bounce off of Max Baer. Max Baer may want it but Jack Dempsey needed it.
