The problem with analyzing this matchup is that this wouldn't be "Prime v Prime" because Toney wasn't in his prime when he fought in this weight range. Toney would be sedentary and would be within range to get hit by a big, big puncher but... he would still be a sharp, sharp puncher with excellent defense and a good chin. Despite Toney's sluggishness at this weight, he'd have little trouble intercepting or timing Marciano's looping punches and countering all night. This will sound crazy but I'm picking Toney by UD:nut.

Jirov was about 60% the fighter Marciano was and he hung with James well. You do the math. Marciano KO. That shoulder roll, tuck your chin, throw up your arms defense is great until the guy you're fighting loves to hit your shoulder, arms, hips, every piece of exposed flesh with debilitating power. Toney never fought anyone near as good or relentless as a prime Marciano.

He didn't look sluggish against Jirov. Roach mentioned that it was the first time Toney was in shape to fight in a long time. And judging by the fight, except for Toney's not so ripped physique, he did go 12 comfortably against a high pressure fighter who was known to break down fighters.

Past Prime, Light-Heavyweight, Charles went the distance with Marciano in a fight he called his toughest.

38 year old Walcott lasted 12+ with Marciano and was out-boxing Maricano until he got caught against the ropes and decided to throw as Marciano was throwing his big punch. Of course, that's all credit to Marciano for setting it up.

LaStarza went the distance in their first meeting which some say he really won that fight.

I don't think Toney is completely out of this fight.

Toney's been in with Big Punchers...and they've hit him everywhere. Sam Peter unleashed on the back of Toney's head. He took it somehow.

What can James Toney do that Archie Moore couldn't do?

Well...Archie Moore was a smarter, faster, more powerful version of James Toney and he got his ass kicked against Marciano. How can Toney possibly do any better? If anything, the marciano-moore fight shows that attempting to use a cross arm defense combined with shoulder rolls and counter right hands will only work temporarily...and you will end up getting beaten down by marciano's library of bonecrushers.

Toney initially puts up a good fight-before he too is inevitably KO'd. Nothing could stop Marciano when he was focused.

How about have a better chin?

James Toney was NEVER Knocked Out like Archie Moore was.

How many fights had Moore been in before he fought Marciano?

How many wars had Moore been in before he fought Marciano?

How many times was Moore dropped in his career before he went into the ring with Marciano?

How many times was he knocked-out before he went int the ring with Marciano?

What did Marciano do to Moore that hasn't already been done and quicker?

How about not be 50 years old.

I can tell you who has knocked-out Walcott, Charles, and Moore all before Marciano fought them.
So let's not act like Marciano did the unbelievable especially given where each of those fighters started their career at as far as weight-class, the weight-class they were most known for, like Charles at LH, Moore at LH...as well as AGE, and Wear and Tear.
