Sam Peter throws three punches a round. Marciano's output is, well, slightly higher. The accumulative damage of one round Marciano at his best is draining. 15 rounds, at his best, is damn hard to last out.

Archie was under 40 when he fought Marciano. Check again. Some historian/filmmaker you are

Why don't you tell us again what a murderous contender Luis Firpo was

Although I don't think Toney has serious chances, at all, I think it would be a very good fight. It would be interesting to watch Toney try to survive the onslaught, and I think that any rounds he managed to win would be boxing masterpieces in miniature almost by definition. Maybe as close as 8-4.

Watch Marciano-Moore. I mean actually watch it. Marciano is hittable and readable, that much is known. But how the hell is anyone but the very hardest puncher around 190lbs supposed to deal with him? When Marciano found a rhythm, it was left, right, left, right, left, right... Very predictable, but unstoppable, because nobody can evade every shot. The ones that landed must have sapped energy, especially that awkward left uppercut (possibly the most utilised left uppercut in history). Toney would need a railway spike in each glove to raise his chances.

    Mcgrain,

Toney may have an excellent chin...but I don't think he is on the skill/speed/power level of a Archie Moore(who got destroyed by Marciano). Archie won only 2-3 out of the first 8 rounds. I don't see Toney doing any better. I don't even think Toney has the power to keep Marciano in place. how is toney going to stop Marciano from throwing shot after shot? Toney, suffers a severe beating in this fight, imo. For almost every round..if we are taking Marciano at his best. I don't think Toney matches up well with 185lb ATG swarmers with great two fisted power and relentless stamins.

The thing about the Moore fight is that Archie's hands were a little tied on the way he had to fight the fight. He had to spend time in the pocket and try to counter-punch Rocky out of there. I believe it was the right plan given the opponent and his own age. He just couldn't outbox Marciano for 8 of 15 under that type of pressure and being a ring genius, he knew it. So he comes further in, looks for the hardest punches, scores the KD because of this but is also forced to take chances - chances that get him clipped.

Toney, odd as it may sound, isn't handicapped by KO power in this fight, so he will box - he knows the opposite of what Moore knew, namely that he cannot knock Marciano out. So he'd do the opposite, try to sneak rounds, try to counter-punch, stay out of trouble, remain as conservative as possible whilst keeping the fight as competitive as possible. It's a safety first strategy in many ways, and one that Toney, with his limited punching power (against an opponent as big and durable as Rocky), isn't really going to break from.

So yeah, I see him making the distance. Marciano could knock him out though.

Take a punch. As I've already mentioned, Toney would be within range to get hit but Marciano wouldn't hit James Toney flush on the button the entire fight. Even if he did, "Lights Out" wouldn't get sparked. I know it sounds crazy to pick James Toney over The Rock but I just think Marciano would get outclassed. I made the same prediction with a Jerry Quarry-Rocky Marciano thread although I'm a bit more confident with the Toney prediction.

Vassily Jirov and Evander Holyfield less big and durable than Rocky ?
Who would have given the 6 years older , 5" shorter , fat former middleweight a chance against them ?
Yet he knocked wach one of them down and stopped Holyfield .
Sam Peter may have been less able of causing accumulative damage than Marciano but also had a greater punch resistance ("chin") than Rocky , and was much younger than Toney fight time , not to mention he too was bigger than Marciano .

It would be a worse version of Marciano-Moore with Toney possibly being able to absorb more punishment (Due to his better chin). I don't know why I picked Marciano by decision. I guess Toney can take a beating and last the distance but he's going to be abused and shut-down.

If Toney goes the distance with Marciano, he is destroyed afterwards. It would take everything out of him.

It would be a tough fight because of styles, but Marciano by UD.

Safety first option would work even worse. Now that Toney doesn't have the power to keep Rocky honest and is going to box he's going to be broken down. Eventually, when Toney can't keep Rocky honest he will be so sedentary near the ropes that he will get his body pounded at. Toney's feet are just far too slow, and he's not slick or fast enough to avoid Rocky's shot when he is planted. He will get overwhelmed by a barrage of punches. Even Moore had better movement, and at least power to make Rocky try to stay honest. Toney's also going to find that crouch more difficult to hit than he would most men. Toney has zero pray in winning IMO.
