I can't believe Son of Gaul thinks Toney beats Marciano. I am even further shocked that he said toney would "outclass" Marciano. Gosh, if he thinks toney would beat Marciano, he must think toney easily whips up on Archie Moore.

I personally don't think Toney is anywhere near the class of an Archie Moore. Archie's best effort wasn't even close to being good enough against Marciano.

It's amazing how this child continues to compare a forty plus Archie against a prime Toney .... SQ, your arguments are faulty from the bottom up ... you have no under pinning what so ever ... The only ones that believed Archie was 39 for that fight was Archie's manager to make the fight and fanatics like yourself who will stop at nothing to build a case for Marciano's opponents qualifications ...

Have to agree with this. Marciano was the ultimate at breaking down cute fighters like Toney. Shoulder rolling vs the average pro is ok but try doing it against a relentless swarming slugger who throws 80+ power punches a round.

It would be a rash man who picked any technician under 200lbs over Marciano.

Toney would suffer the same fate of Archie Moore, just I think he would last longer because of his chin. I think Marciano would finally break James down in the late rounds and stop him. Toney doesn't have the legs to keep away from Marciano, so he would try and stay in front of him while shoulder rolling and blocking. He could shoulder roll and block many of Marciano's punches so they wouldn't have their full effect, but it would wear him out more than it would Rocky, who would only get stronger as it went on. I really think this fight would look like a longer version of the Archie Moore fight.

Wrong. A consensus came out and it proved Archie was born in 1916 making him 38 years old at the time of the Marciano fight. It feels great to prove you wrong you pompous imbecile.

Archie was 38 against Marciano. Not 40 +.

I would also argue Archie Moore was very much in his prime in 1955.

Going into the Marciano fight in 55, He was

    - Reigning Light-Heavyweight Champion
    - Number 1 rated heavyweight contender
    - 45-1 in his last 46 fights...The best winning streak of his career
    - Coming off major wins over hall of famers Joey Maxim, Harold Johnson, Bobo Olsen and 6'3 210lb + heavyweight contenders Nino Valdes and Bob Baker.

There is nothing on film or in his resume to suggest Archie had declined by 1955.

Whether or not you think Moore was in his prime, Archie Moore of 1955 still would have layed an ass whupping on any version of James Toney. Harold Johnson would have too.

Says the closet Jack Dempsey fan.

Wasn't the discussion of his age talked about being possibly 3 years older or so. I think his Mother gave one birth/year, 1913, and Archie gave 1916. I'll go with his Mother. I think more people believe he was older than what he said.

Patterson destroyed Archie (and quicker) as well and he wasn't the only one to take him out. Nobody has destroyed James Toney.

Let's also remember that Toney isn't slow with his hands nor a wide puncher and is an incredible counter-puncher.

The problem that has plagued James is getting in shape. But he was sometimes in shape...like against Jirov.

Patterson would have destroyed James Toney. Harold Johnson(an Archie Moore victim), would have beaten toney as badly as Roy Jones did.

So is Archie Moore. The difference is Archie is 10x the puncher Toney was.

He still nearly lost that fight. Jirov wouldn't last 3 rounds with Marciano, and wouldn't win a round vs either Harold Johnson or Archie Moore.

    Ok, I'm wrong.

WOW, 38 years old, nearly 39 years old. What a newborn.

How many fights did he have?

How many wars did he have?

How many times was he knocked down, knocked out?

how much wear and tear did he have?

Was 38/39 years old really that young when looking at it?

Marciano did nothing new against Moore that hasn't already been done.

Moore isn't 10x the puncher Toney is. What an exaggeration.

And he didn't nearly lose the fight with Jirov.

Should we talk about Marciano's struggles?

Moore would go on for another 8 years with a record of 37-2-3. And he came from his best streak going into that fight. Indications that he was still in or near his prime.

Moore is a far superior puncher to Toney. I can´t see how anybody can argue that.

And yes, the Jirov fight was close. Jirov wasn´t even half as good as Marciano. And now Toney beats Marciano? Ridiculous.

No, he's not. Here's one arguing.

    That's a matter of opinion.
