Prime versions of Joe Jeannette ,Sam Langford, and Sam McVey versus a prime Brown Bomber? Fifteen rounds 1940's gloves Any upsets here?
Based on the footage I have seen available, I would say no. Unfortunately that footage is limited. In the Jeanette Langford battle, Joe seems to lunge or reach with his jab which not only puts him out of position(and his trail hand flails away from his body) but would be a nightmare for Louis' counter straight right or left hook. Mcvey against battling Jim Johnson walks to his opponent with his hands down. Schmeling had slow feet and liked to fight in the pocket but his attack is far less crude and he guarded himself much better with a lean at the waste away from his opponents. Similar to Mayweather actually without the footwork. Mcvey seems too crude. The best on film and I think most would agree is Langford. Based on his punch alone I could-could- see an upset but to be Honest I think Joe Louis handles all three.
