You are entirely wrong to dismiss all the old sports writers as being racist.

For example Nat Fleischer did as much as any writer of the era to promote the interests of black fighters, but he still regarded Jeffries as being the second greatest heavyweight of his lifetime.

Fleischer was a staunch defender of Jack Johnson, while Jeffries was refusing to fight him, when he had no way of knowing that Johnson would ever be champion.

He was also a big supporter of black fighters in other weight classes, such as Joe Gans, and Barbados Joe Walcott.

He still said that Jeffries was second only to Jack Johnson in the pantheon of heavyweights, at a time when Frazier was champion!

You need to stop looking at the names, and start looking at what their credentials were at the time.

What do you really know about Fitzsimmons hitting power? I think very little. He could produce many 10 count KO's and blew out men as easily as Foreman did in his time. Historians who lived in the times felt Fitz's power was better than Dempsey and Louis in some cases. Do you count their power too Rich?

I think Fitzsimmons hit has hard as Lyle who had Foreman out and closer to defeat than Jeffries every was in his prime. I think Fitzsimmons hit harder than Jimmy Young, who also dropped Foreman, and later had his collapse in his dressing room.

I think Foreman looked pretty sloppy and bad vs Ali and was put down for the count based on one hard right cross by Ali, who really was not a big time puncher.

To hammer it one more time, Tommy Morrison, glass jaw and limited stamina with just decent skills, beat the old Foreman. Foreman was as much as an Act as a talent in the 1990's, and was 0-3 in title fights before liking out on Mike Moorer, who by was way ahead on the score cards.

Ya think Jeffries would not do the same or better than Morrison? He'd savage the old man to the body and head. It would not be pretty.

I don't call Jeffries an ATG I think he was great for his time and you would be hard pushed to find a dozen writers who would place him in their top ten today.How many of those ranking him saw Jeffries?
You are rewriting history when you state he was hard to hit, he wasn't, you are rewriting it when you say he was a brawler ,a slugger ,and a swarmer he wasn't.His favourite tactic was to wait and counter his man as he came in and that is how Ruhlin's second Jim Corbett planned Gus's fight,to move away and make Jeffries chase you.
Jeffries was forced to discard his usual style and initiate the attacks ,he also fought a lot more upright in this fight abandoning his crouch,anyone judging Jeffries off of this fight would be mislead,he was essentially re-ctive rather than pro-active,the Sharkey fight gives a much clearer idea of his style.
The fact that you don't know this yet are still attempting to tell us how Jeffries fought is surprising.

Ruhlin claimed he was hit low early in their fight and he couldn't get going after that,whatever the truth of it
the newspapers castigated him for not trying and quitting,in essence he froze on his big night.

Ruhlin had been half killed by bodyshots from Fitz a year earlier, since that fight he had struggled to a 6 rds draw with drunk Peter Maher in a fight in which both were exhausted after 3 rds.Gus's form did not merit a title shot,it should have been Fitzsimmons in there with Jeffries, not the gone back Ruhlin.
Jeffries himself said he was surprised that Ruhlin's corner threw in the towel because he hadn't landed that much on him and the contemporary ringside reports support his opinion.
