this would be a great matchup. im taking layne even though quarry will have his moments. i think layne is the stronger puncher.
Layne is the stronger puncher, but Quarry is the better fighter. Quarry actually had a concept of defense, while Layne did not. I like Quarry by unanimous decision.
It took Shommel to introduce a H2H thread for Quarry that was actually reasonable. Thank you, Shommel.
I saw Rex Layne fight, and there is no way Rex Layne beats a prime Jerry Quarry. Young Jerry Quarry was a helluva a fighter, before too many rough, tough bouts took it's toll on Jerry...
There were 2 Rex Layne's the one before the devastating Marciano KO loss that compiled 34-1-2 record and the one after....prior to Marciano, Layne avenged his only Loss 3 times last one a KO over Dave Whitlock and wins over Turkey Thompson, Jersey Joe Walcott and Caesar Brion and an exciting KO over Bob Satterfield, getting off the floor. There were also 2 Jerry Quarry s the one that fought even with Floyd Patterson and lost to Jimmy Ellis and the Quarry that dominated Mac Foster, Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers The post Marciano Layne loses to both but I like the pre-Marciano Layne to have a good chance to beat Quarry although no sure thing. Remember Layne was being touted as the next champ called the new Dempsey by Nat Fleischer and others. The Marciano one punch KO which severed Layne's top teeth at the nubs ruined Layne
Jerry would have huge advantages in speed, mobility and quickness over Layne, who was decimated by Marciano's own vastly superior hand speed to his. JQ-Layne would be a very different fight that Marciano-Layne, as Jerry would apply movement and his counter punching wiles. However, that's my initial sentiment after spotting this thread. I'd want to review Layne-Walcott again before setting that opinion in concrete. Layne did get up to stop Satterfield. Beating JJW and taking the middle bout with Charles after the Marciano loss are results which might not be expected for a fighter of his ilk. The man had some good wins and certainly didn't shy away from tough and extremely dangerous competition.
