Willard wasn't great, his record is probably weaker than Ruiz record, at least it's debatable.

For a long durarion fight, it's possible that Ruiz would get tired and Willard would stop him. For shorter distance, Ruiz would outbox him quite easily.

I don't think it is really.

Willard doesn't have the strongest record of a lineal champion, but he is not a guy with one good win either.

You didn't fix it, you made it wrong.

His best wins are probably in this order:

    1. Jack Johnson
    2. Frank Moran
    3. Carl Morris
    4. Floyd Johnson

It's not all-time bad of course, but I wouldn't call any of his wins outside of Johnson a strong one either. Ruiz has comparable quality in his resume as well and he lost less fights.

I ma not sure that he does to be honest.

For example, Moran seems to have been viewed as one of the top three contenders when Willard beat him.

That makes him OK as a second best win.

What is Ruiz's second best win?

Some people thought that he deserved the decision against Parker, but then some thought that Willard should have got the nod against Smith and McCarthy.

It seems to me that Willards scraps stack up better than Ruiz's scraps.

Being top 3 contender for a very brief moment doesn't make you a great (or even good) win. I also doubt he was a better contender than Wills, Langford, Jeannette, Fulton or Miske.

No, but it probably makes you a better scalp than people outside the top ten.

When Jack Dempsey fought Fred Fulton, one newspaper said that Fulton had beaten better opposition, because he had beaten Moran!

Moran seems to have been highly regarded.

It is hard to understand why exactly, but he obviously was.

It really is something else. I remember being shocked by how undertrained Max Baer looked when I first watched footage of some of his fights several years ago. Willard makes him look like Guillermo Rigondeaux!

Yes, you could see this in the lounge, and in his (now suspended) reddit threads. Will see if I can still find it, even though his account has been deleted.

    Eddie Santry:

He's about the best there is right now, through still green. I was in the ring and right close to the men all the time and will say that Willard hits harder than any heavyweight in the game today. Fitzsimmons, when his hands were good, could not hit with more pile-driving force than this fellow. Jess was under wraps all the way with Bauer for fear of injuring him, but at that he shot over a couple of right-hand uppercuts that would have stopped less gamer ring men than the St. Charley heavy.
I never saw a boxer improve as fast as Willard. He's got a nasty left hook developed, the short kind, you know, that does not have to travel far to hurt. And his right uppercuts and crosses are stunners. He does not waste punches either, and when he starts one, it's a good bet it will land. There is none of the old-woman milling style with him. He did not pull a punch from his hips in the fight. All of them were the snappy kind that you see champions use.
I do not hesitate to say that I think Willard can trim Jack Johnson in the latter's present condition.
I saw McCarty fight a couple times, and if Willard can't beat him, then I never had a boxing glove on. Willard is bigger and tougher and a harder hitter than McCarty, and I actually believe he can out-box him too.

    Y’all must’a forgot. Smh
