The problem for Frazier is that the left hook was never a particularly useful weapon against Larry, and that's the punch Joe lived and died by. A much taller and longer armed Cooney wasn't able to use his left hook effectively, except to lose points with low blows. Holmes has the combination of height, reach, jab and mobility to keep his body away from Smoke's hooks downstairs, and enough power to swell his good friend's eyes shut or at least severely impair his vision. Larry's not brawling it out the way Ali did in the FOTC and Manila. Also, he never lost due to attrition. The only bouts which he acknowledged losing were Tyson and Holyfield, when Holmes was rusty and aged.
Initially I was going to vote Holmes. The more I think about it the more I lean towards to Frazier by decision. I think his left hook gives Holmes trouble all night, potentially dropping him. Holmes’s jab would be a problem but I think Frazier would be able to adapt and find the target. I’ll take smokin Joe in this one by a very close decision, maybe only coming down to a decisive knockdown.
Frazier is going to set a pace Holmes has never seen, and he can't discourage Joe either. It will take everything Larry has to get through rounds 12-15. decent chance Larry doesn't hear the final bell.
Holmes isn’t hurting or stopping Frazier so it then becomes a war of attrition and there’s no one better that Smokin Joe who sets a relentless pace with incredible stamina and work rate
I think there would definitely be a similarity to the FOTC in this matchup--Frazier survives a war and "grinds out" a decision through sheer will! (And like the FOTC he would take some pretty heavy punishment and pay a price afterwards!!)
Holmes beats the crap out of Joe. Fight probably gets stopped late do to Joes swelling/ maybe cuts. Joe is not gonna hurt Holmes at all. Holmes in an easy fight. He will have to throw a lot though/work
I have to go with Joe Frazier in this one. As much as I respect Larry Holmes, I do not see him doing much better than FOTC Muhammad Ali did. It would look a little different, but I think Joe would prevail by decision, because of his relentless pressure.
After Holmes tastes some of Frazier's body shots he would end up on his heels similar to when Tyson was on him, Holmes lasts longer than he did against Tyson but Frazier never stops punishing him, Holmes would have some excuse about how he had this great strategy and was about to land a big KO punch but Frazier's pressure was too much
