I think Johnson confuses him and throws off his rythmn ... Louis would have trouble hitting him. Johnson was strong enough to tie him up and smother him and hit more than hard enough to keep him off ... in many ways a better Walcott ...
Louis by KO, especially if Louis tries to get rid of him early. Stylistically, Louis is a huge problem for JJ. Johnson looked like a defensive mastermind against very average opposition, many of whom would simply dive in with a few wild hooks and hope for the best. Louis was a very precise, very patient, very fast puncher who wouldn't have given Johnson any room for counter-punching. He never had to deal with anyone who had the ability of Louis, simple as. Also, Johnson was used to being able to manhandle people on the inside - counter them, then tie them up. He outsmarted a lot of brawlers that way. Louis didn't let people just grab onto him. He'd shove them off, then blast them with an upper cut or a short hook then go back into the clinch. Johnson just wouldn't get a let-up, inside or outside. Yeah, Louis early KO.
It is stange how people overlook this when denigrating the talent of fighters from Blackburns era. For my money if you put Jack Blackburns brain in Joe Louis's body you would have the ultimate heavyweight Frankensteins monster.
Brilliant! Louis' weak point really was that he was not the smnartest fighter that ever lived ... the changes he could not make in a fight had to be drilled into him for the rematch where he excelled because his body could execute.
Sharkey was kod by one of the slowest, most inept champions ever. And it was accomplished with an uppercut .Jack Johnson was an acknowledged master of this punch ,just one of them broke Moran's nose. Schmeling? he was kod by wild swinging crude Baer, do you see him outboxing Johnson? If you think he can ko Jack with his right cross ,don't forget that Johnson forecast Louis's demise to this very punch because Joe did not bring his left hand back into position after throwing a jab, it would not connect on Johnson.
I've only really seen Johnson land uppercuts on people who jumped into him, like I said. He threw it well; I'm sure he'd connect with it. But anyway, Louis snapped people's heads up in the air with those uppercuts, he'd throw it, too. How many guys did he KO with that right uppercut-left hook combo? A fair few. In any case, if it comes down to trading punches, Louis would probably **** Jack up, let's face it.
Sharkey could be a handfull for anybody when his head was screwed on and Johnson is probably no exception. I am prety sure he would find a way to loose though. Johnson Schmeling would be an interesting matchup. Schmeling had a fine uppercut of his own and he worked largley by inverting the boxing textbook and picking people apart based on how they followed it.
Sharkey was indeed a gifted boxer ,but better than Johnson ? I dont think so.Sharkey lost fights he should have won to guys like Rojas and he was handily outboxed by Loughran in one of their fights. How do you see him beating Jack exactly? Schmeling was a fine fighter, but methodical , I just can't see him beating Johnson. Louis might ,many would say he would ,I think Johnson would win ,but I wouldnt put any money on it.
I Joe had to many weapons for Jack to deal with. Between the combination punching and the power and speed in both hands I don't think Jack could deal with it.
Jack ran hot and cold. As a betting man that's why I would put my money on Johnson, as it more often comes down to temperment than any certain skill. Not that Johnson was the most consistent performer- he wasn't close- Sharkey defines mercurial. However, if we get Sharkey on a good day, he beats Johnson more often than not. And in regards to the Carnera fight, I still think that was fixed.
