The following prime fighters Sonny Liston Evander Holyfield Lennox Lewis Ken Norton Ezzard Charles Rocky Marciano Ike Ibeabuchi Chris Byrd Archie Moore (Prime Joe Louis from the second Max Schmeling fight era against these guys)
Liston-Win by decision Holyfield-Loss by decision Lewis-Win by 11 RD KO Norton-Win by 8 RD KO Charles-Win by 12 RD KO Marciano-Win by decision Ibeabuchi-Loss by KO or Win by decision (I'm undecided) Byrd-Win by 6 RD KO Moore-Loss by decision
I would favour him over all of them, but if he were to fight them all, I feel that somebody would pull the trick.
Concur. A 12 rd fight today (as opposed to 15) would favor an upset. You only need to "win" 7 rds today for a typical decision victory.
Fighting the best opponents in the division is like playing Russian roulette. However good you happen to be. You can get away with it for a while, but you will dodge bullets, or lose in an upset eventually.
The assumption is every fight is both men at their best. At his best Sonny Liston Sixth round ko. Evander Holyfield. Tenth round ko Lennox Lewis Eleventh round ko. Ken Norton third round ko Ezzard Charles. Twelfth round ko Rocky Marciano. Decision over 15. Ike Eighth round ko Chris Byrd tenth round ko Archie Moore. Second round ko.
I think that is particularly true for recent times but back then I think they had more guts and talent to pull it off.
With the Liston fight I would think that somebody has to break not going to the scorecard. Who that is is a debatable topic. Holyfield was tough and smart, I couldn't see Louis stopping him. Charles had an iron chin, was fast, and was very smart. I could see that going either way. You don't think the old mongoose had enough to stay in with Louis? He had many tricks and excellent defense.
We are talking Louis on his very best night in every fight. Aside from Ali no one beats that Joe Louis. Too destructive, too highly skilled. Liston was a poor mans Louis. Power but with a much lower skill set.
Prime Charles was stopped once by Lloyd Marshall and I wouldn't even consider that his prime. He had a hip injury going into the fight and got up 8 times. He was 22.
