Alot of stupid comments here, Jones is winning but not by a third round knockout. Calzaghe's handspeed and awkward and aggresive southpaw style is enough to make him compete with Jones throughout the early running but Jones is a much stronger puncher which would wear Calzaghe down, his chin is good so he would hold out but late its probably getting stopped although I could see Calzaghe taking it the distance, I cant see him beating a prime Jones though.
well if Calzaghe gets to be prime I say a hell of a fight and a draw. Really could go either way, Calzaghe would be a bit faster and with good hands he would hit about the same hard, but Jones would have the ring generalship and punch precision.
An old Jones almost KO'd him in the first...but prime vs prime, unless Jones was motivated to destroy him (see Griffen2), the fight would probley go to the late rounds with JC having his moment but eventual getting KTFO
Disclaimer: I know nothing about boxing. This will doubtless become apparent during my post, but I like this place and want to contribute - other clueless individuals can do it, so why not? Here goes: Calzaghe in his earlier career had enough power in his (then unbroken) hands that Jones wouldn't just walk through him without any fear. His handspeed would present some problems even to a younger Roy. He arguably had more stamina than even he displayed later in his career. He did like to mix it up at times when it would have been wiser (perhaps) to keep some distance, however, and whilst I can't see that strategy working well for Joe with a dangerous opponent like Roy, I'm not blessed with the boxing brain that Calzaghe has displayed, so I have confidence that he'd take the fight to Jones and somehow make it work. The thing about Calzaghe's approach throughout his career that I enjoyed is that he seemed to recognize the futility of planning, varying his style/pace and ultimately demoralising physically-stronger opponents. He didn't apparently need wee Enzo's tactical or strategic advice, because Joe was always the best coach in the building. People who fought him seemed to say similar things afterwards... 1) he hit harder than they envisaged (although that's not really surprising given that most people seem to agree that Calzaghe possessed all the power and sturdiness of an osteoporosis-stricken infant) 2) he spoiled their boxing (Far more important to me, and he did it without making the fights boring IMHO, which is apparently very difficult to achieve given the fights I've seen in the last 30 years). **Bad Analogy Alert** Jones vs Calzaghe = classical guitar (performance) vs jazz guitar (creativity). Both have technical skills, both know their theory well. Put them both in a situation where they don't have a set plan in front of them, however, and see who thrives. Improvisation is draining, and no amount of fast-twitch muscle memory will help you play across the changes.
Jones would beat him by a clear UD. And people plz remember that the Calzaghe/Jones fight doesn't show anything of what would have happened in a prime4prime fight. Maybe the knockdown
I would say Jones, but with so much more trouble than the general consensus. If I was to imagine a scenario it would be one or two flash knockdowns on his way to a close unanimous decision. Calzaghe outworking and getting the rounds Roy slacks off in. 7-5 with two knockdowns at different stages: 115-111 is my fantasy prediction. :yep I've never seen Calzaghe so much as dazed. Down yes, but never in trouble. I think he definitely sees the final bell.
