Either a 12 or 15 round fight I would give the edge to prime Holmes. In his prime he would have landed that jab and right hand repeatedly as say Frank Bruno (for one) did in their fight. Lewis was a heavy puncher and big guy but Holmes was effective against those type of guys. Good fight but I think Larry could win by TKO in 8-10 rounds or a UD over the distance.
If forced to make a pick, then I'd take Holmes by a close decision. But, on his best night Lewis could have really found a home for that right hand and possibly taken the victory.
Could go either way. Cooney gave holmes a good fight and lewis was much better than cooney. Holmes was susceptible to the right hand and I could envision lewis landing it and putting holmes on his back. On the other hand, lewis didn't have the strongest of chins so the same could easily happen to him. Holmes was the quicker, smarter boxer, lewis the more powerfull fighter. However, holmes could be troubled by a good jab and lewis had one, and it was stronger than holmes jab, though not quicker. If I had to make a choice I'd pick holmes based on ring gereralship but not with a lot of conviction. Lewis would be better than anyone that holmes ever faced and it would be very tough.
Just to go against the flow Il pick Lewis who would be taking a smaller qualatative step up in competition than Holmes.
Interesting. For me this fight would be one of the most intriguing HW matchups, in reality it could go either way (only a place seperate 'em on my list), but I think Larry's jab would trouble Lenny more than vice versa and for me Holmes is the superior mover, though not greatly so. Lewis' better power and bigger size even things up, but I think Holmes has those little edges in the factors that will decide the fight: chin/heart/consistent workrate/jab. To counter than how would Larry cope with Lewis' strength, power, size. One thing is for sure neither fighter faced anything really like the other. Over to you, how you see the fight panning out style-wise?
Holmes via narrow UD for me. Lewis had trouble with good jabbers. Thought Holmes would be giving up at least 20 pounds, he wasn't much shorter in height and reach, and seemed to have more energy than Lewis did in the later rounds.
If Frank Bruno's jab could give Lewis such trouble I think Holmes' jab and footwork would bewilder him. Although Holmes didnt have the real aggressive pushing forward jab that Bruno used, eh... I still pick Holmes by UD.
As everyone seems to agree here its a very closely fought encounter, you could argue it either way. Holmes' with his sometime issue of the right hand finding its way through vs the problems Lennox faced against a good jabber. Hard to say really...I like Larry's consistency though, far to often did Lennox come in underdone and either lost or had a lacklustre performance. Larry also had some good performances when he pulled away in the championship rounds, something I could almost never see Lennox doing aswell.
I honestly think that if Shavers and Snipes can almost have Larry out of there then Lewis has a great chance to stop him. Much is being made of Lewis's chin but in all honesty it only let him down twice in a 14 year career. The odds of Larry stopping Lennox are slim by that token alone. I think the 'Holmes jab' would cause Lewis some problems but Larry wasn't a defensive wizard and at some point Lewis is gonna land with the left jab-right cross- right uppercut combo and it will be interesting to see what Larry does when he's caught like that. Lewis TKO 8 for me.
This is obviously a fight whereby who ever wins, it's not going to be huge surprise. I see it as either a Holmes win on points or a Lewis TKO and I'm going to go with the latter.
I think that Holmes would have slightly the better of the boxing exchanges. Eventualy however I think that the power of the slightly outboxed Lewis would make Holmes pay an equal or slightly higher price in terms of atrition. At some point that big right hand finds its mark, and I think enough of Lewis's tactical ability to suspect that he would arrange for this to happen and then capitalise on it. At this point Lewis will either finish Holmes or take control of the fight to take the later rounds. If I had to put money on it I would say that Lewis would take the judges out of the equation before the end of the fight.
