Do you think that any fighter apart from Jeffries could have beaten Fitzsimmons then?

My guess is that Fitzsimmons was still the second best heavyweight in the world!

I am afraid that doesn't quite cut it!

Do you think that anybody apart from Jeffries could have beaten Fitzsimmons in 02?

It speaks volumes that the best contenders during Jeffries' reign as White Heavyweight Champion were a combination of the following facets; undersized, old, wharfbrawling, barnstorming, has-beens, amateurs.

Of those that were allowed to excel, sure. And again, it speaks volumes of the paucity of talent that able to make it to the top.

If we look at sports in general many athletes who competed as recently as the early 2000s could be said to have competed in poor eras.

Case in point look at all the records that have fallen since 2003 when Lennox Lewis and Michael Jordan retired.

Is Michael Jordan not great because his era didn't have as much depth as the 2010s?

He had the luxury of not having to deal with a prime Kevin Durant, LeBron, Giannis, etc

    Please....Janitor's sensibilities....

Without trying to hurt the (

) reality of some, this one is a good approx. of Corbett, Fitz or Sharkey on their bicycle against a young, aggressive LL.... :eusa_whistle:

So the biggest scrub in Lewis career is an equivalent of arguably the P4P GOAT?

Again, comparisons with basketball don't make any sense...

That is the other obvious possibility that you would have to consider.

Corbett often appears on top twenty all time heavyweight lists, but I feel that Fitzsimmons has a better case!

Without any doubt to me, Fitzsimmons was the best HW in the world for years until Jeffries beat him. He beat every single relevant HW contender from that period (except Joe Goddard), his resume is deep and top-heavy and he won his fights in spectacular fashion.

Yes, a 39 year old 160 something pound guy was the second best white heavyweight at the time.
