It's hard to think anyone beating prime Manny at his best. I just think size and style might favour Martinez. Wouldn't be surprised Manny doing it either the more I think on it

Martinez represented the sport very well, he was a noble champion and always fought with tons of heart. He merits a lot of esteem from fans. But levels are real. Sergio was very good on his best nights - Pacquiao is great, and being timed and KO'd by the finest trade counterpuncher in a generation is no smirch on that. Landing the perfect punch on Paul Williams and landing it on Manny are two different things. Sergio isn't a master counterpuncher (though he can counterpunch, like all boxers can to some degree), he's a speed/stamina guy who moves a lot and likes to be first. Manny can beat him at that game with some added wrinkles besides.

The only clear advantage Martinez has over Pacquiao is size, and it wouldn't have been enough. Manny has edges in nous/experience and athletic capability, and those would guide him to a close but clear decision some way above his optimum weight. Neither guy is getting stopped.

 

It would've been competitive but Sergio should win. In the end he's too big for Pacquaio, Pac is really a light welterweight and not even a big one while Sergio was a decent-sized LMW.
