That he did actually Macca. He had decked Henry earlier with a right hand-left hook combo. This content is protected Do you know anything about the London vs Patterson fight mate ? I just watched the ending and Floyd put him away with a rat a tat combination to the body followed by a left hook to the temple. I was pretty surprised that London did better against Patterson than Cooper did. Cheers.
London didn't have a good training camp for Patterson,he was fined by the BBBOC for taking the fight, they thought he was not good enough. I wouldn't say Brian did better ,but he did last longer!
Ringo was a really odd fighter in my opinion. The bloke was as strong as an ox, just an incredibly naturally strong fella. He threw really unusual punches at very strange angles too. He could bang. He was a bit quicker n sneakier than he appeared and he was actually a smarter fighter than given credit for. I would describe him as a " natural fighter ". He never seemed out of his comfort zone in the ring. In the period between the first fight with Frazier and the Ali fight he was a bit of a handful for anyone in my opinion and a lot bigger and stronger guy than Marciano ever was. Juan Roldan was another Argentine fighter of that ilk but nowhere near as tough as Bonavena who was a bit of an animal in the ring similar to say Mayorga.
Wow I forgot about that Macca. I actually read something about that situ a little while ago when I was reading about Dick Richardson and having a squiz at Sir Enery's autobiography. Compare that to modern boxing where the British board would be happy to see some stiff fed to the local fighter. Some of the guys Calzaghe and Eubank sr fought were pretty ordinary. Then I think about the poor Pinoy and Thai fellas they bring to Australia to be fed to our up and comers. Not good. Cheers Mate.
Granted Chuvalo was no Willie Pep,but Bonavena looked pretty good against him imo.He was a wee bit more skilful than some thought and because, he threw punches from all angles very difficult to predict and time.
Neither did Ali. Neither did Frazier. Neither did 70s Foreman. Neither did Liston. Do you use the same standards for them? That's what I thought...
No they didn't. They never beat any fast, modern heavyweights with power. If they did then Marciano did.
Well what are we actually matching him against here? A man who was arguably the greatest heavyweight of all time, but not one of exceptional size or power in the grand scheme of things.
Frazier, for one, beat a tall 6-3 guy who was 215, had a 78" reach and was pretty fast on whatever fast scale you are using. And he stopped a couple all time greats that no one had ever stopped before.
Who said anything about Frazier? If you don't mind my saying so, the size argument is being employed against Marciano, in a rather obsessive way these days. People have started dismissing his chances against fighters who were barely bigger than the guys that he was beating, on the justification that they were simply too big for him!
That's not a modern heavyweight. A modern heavyweight is over 230 pounds IN SHAPE. Also with POWER, Ali did not have the power of a modern heavyweight.
You always leave out the fast part of the equation.... Perhaps because if you included it, your argument would be flimsier than it already is.
