Hearns at 147 was one of the true greats, and a terrible matchup for Margo. He's one of the few fighters in HISTORY I would pick to KO Margo.
Doubt it. Worse chinned fighters than Margarito didn't get stopped cold by Hearns, and Margarito's shown absolutely nothing to suggest he gets knocked cold at the weight- he's just too damned big and hard headed. I'd say Tommy wins by UD or late stoppage (ref or corner).
Margarito too easy to hit for a prime Hearns. Margarito has faced good punchers but never a great puncher. Also Margo is susceptible to the jab and right hand, Hearns best punches. Also Hearns had the skills to box his ears off. It wont be a Pipino Cuevas type massacre, but Margarito has struggled with fighters his size or larger.
Before Hearns moved to middleweight he was knocking guys out cold. In 35 plus fights at 147-154 only 5 guys lasted the distance. Also the guy knocked out fighters from welterweight all the way to cruiserweight. Hearns was accurate and fast enough to knock out such a hittable guy and sloppy puncher
It's not his chin that worries me, it's his lack of defense and constant vulnerability to clean shots. I don't care how good your chin is, you're not taking many of those from Hearns(who would be connecting clean all night for as long as it lasted) without going down.
Oh I know all about Hearns as he's one of my favorite fighters and I think he gets underrated on many all time P4P lists (The Ring's top 80 of the past 80 years is a good example of this). It's not a matter of disrespecting Tommy to suggest Margo lasts the distance or the fight's stopped by someone else- it's not like I'm actually picking Margo to win although it would be an entertaining fight since Tommy sometimes had a bad habit of letting himself get drawn into brawls more than he should've. There's 2 things I cannot take away from Antonio, though: He's got upper level Hall of Fame caliber chin and conditioning. I'm not exaggerating about that and I don't throw out descriptions like that often. I really don't believe Hearns knocks him out cold because I don't think Margarito gives Tommy enough time to set for full power before he's on him, and Tommy, like pretty much all fighters, doesn't hit as hard when he's not doing the stalking. The difference in the fight is that while that's pretty much Margo's only dimension, Tommy had the jab, lateral movement, and countering skills to simply win while letting Margo bring the fight to him. What that adds up to is either a UD or late stoppage via accumulation.
