\ Same here, I wanna ****ing leave this place sometimes. Margarito winning because Barkely was able to win? Jesus christ.
It was closer to an XYZ belt than an ABC. The WBB? Barkley won one title fight against someone not named Tommy Hearns, and lost the other 6. He was a solid contender/fringe beltholder- he might pick up a belt or two depending on matchups, but wasn't the kind of guy to get 5-10 defenses out of it. I think Margarito is a better Welter than Barkley was a Middleweight, but that's just my 2 cents. Hearns was dominating their first fight by boxing and keeping range until he left himself open because he was too focused on the kill and got nailed by a shot coming from an angle he wasn't expecting. Doesn't change my original fight prediction for Hearns-Margo, but a little background never hurts. Had the actual matchup never happened, rest assured that the fantasy matchup wouldn't even be brought up, let alone get past the "Hearns by death" stage- because on paper, Barkley wasn't even close to Tommy's league. Hell, for 95% of the first fight in the ring he wasn't, either. Kind of like with Hagler, Hearns was woefully close to stopping it himself for the W before fate had other ideas. Perhaps saying Hearns stood absolutely no chance of getting upset isn't on the money here because most of the times he lost were either upsets or fights he was on the verge of winning. And hey: maybe people are taking something that will never happen a little too seriously. There's been more **** talk in this thread than 90% of the actual fight threads. It's starting to get to Star Trek-level fights over which captain would win in a fight.
It's easy to do when you're 4 to 5 inches taller than everyone and weigh about 10 pounds more. Just watch the Cuevas fight. Hearns chin was made of cheap China. Margarito would give Hearns a good fight. People just rate the fighters of old a little too high.
Prior to getting starched by Hearns, Cuevas was known for having a great chin. He also carried far more power than Margarito could ever hope to carry. It has nothing to do with overrating old fighters, it has to do with the fact that people overrate the **** out of Margarito based on one win over a fighter not in Hearns's league. Not to mention stylistically Hearns would be landing flush shots all night long. For as long as it lasted anyway.
hardly any other welter ever could crack somebody on the chin as hard and hurtful as a hearns straight right...
a previous generation will always be remembered "better" than the current one. IF this was the 80's and you throw Margarito in the mix Im sure he would be a player. Lets not be blind and see things for what they are. Marg= slow footed, underated power, defense, very hittable, Great Chin, bodypuncher, Conditioning and fights for 3 whole minutes a round. Hearns Great jab, righthand, decent chin, decent conditioning, good footwork, great ring generalship...Margarito would present a Challange lets be real here. A true boxing knowledged person isn't afraid to go against the grain because he is confident on what he knows and isnt worried about what the general "yes men" say.
Hearn had a crystal jaw but he had a powerful punch. I would say Margarito had more chances of winning this one.
This would be very interesting over 15 rounds. I think Hearns would stop him on cuts in the middle rounds. That offense was just too brutal for even Margaritos chin the way he keeps it open. You would be seeing some of the biggest right hands ever landing on that.
with hearns willing to take punches to land his and the way marg throws so many punches you dont think Margs punch will affect Hearns in anyway whatsoever?
1 fight ago margarito didn't have a defining fight. i really don't know know why people jump on a bandwagon so quickly and compare contemporaries to past greats before the dust has even settled. it may end up being a fair comparison, but if paul williams deals out the same justice on margarito one more time people won't compare him to hearns, will they?, simply because he's not as overbearing... think! people always get euphoric about hard hitting fighters - never about the sublime ones.....
