You should watch him in action. He was actually a pretty damn good fighter.

He wasn't "great" ... but neither was Michael Moorer.

And you didn't even need a pulse to give Michael Moorer a rough night. (See Vaughn Bean). Cooney didn't need his trainer to make fake phone calls to his kids and plead with him between rounds to throw punches against a soft touch like Bean.

Moorer didn't bring anything to the table to beat Cooney. Moorer couldn't move around the ring quickly, he didn't throw a lot of punches, he spent 90 percent of the round throwing one jab at a time ... his chin was bad, he stood right in front of his opponent, he pulled his protective cup up to his nipples because he couldn't take it to the body.

He was tailor made for Cooney.

It would have been a fun fight to watch if both were on form. Sort of like Moorer vs Cooper where multiple knockdowns were exchanged. Damn there was some great fights back then.

    I hear you.

Except when Cooney knocked you down early, you didn't get up to win. And Cooney wasn't short at 6'6", and Cooney had a long power jab, and Cooney had an extensive amateur pedigree, and Cooney only lost to Hall of Famers (whereas Cooper was a journeyman).

But other than that, yeah, like Bert Cooper. (LOL)

True. I'm thinking Cooney has to rate up there with some of the most elite punchers of all time. He had his shortcomings but power certainly wasn't among them. And Moorer was decked early on plenty of occasions. I even saw Bigfoot Martin drop him once, though Michael wasn't looking in top shape that night. Certainly would have been interesting to say the least. One question that I have is, did Cooney ever fight any south paws or at least any good ones? Might be interesting to see how he'd approach that style.

Moorer and Norton had the horrible idea that backing into corners was the best way to deal with aggressive punchers.

They needed to step inside and smother that power, they weren't fleet footed and couldn't move their heads to save their life, they both ultimately ended up ducking into punches they didn't see.

This is one way Cooney and Moorer are alike. Cooney was left-handed and fought out of the orthodox stance so his power hand was his lead left.

Moorer was actually right-handed and fought out of the southpaw stance so his power hand was his lead right.

It worked for Moorer in the light heavy division. Unfortunately, in the heavyweight class, it just made him an average-punching fighter. He only managed to stop 19 of his 35 heavyweight opponents, because he primarily just jabbed a lot.

    When was that, exactly?

When he was getting knocked down six times in two fights against Holyfield, struggling with Vaughn Bean and Axel Shulz, getting wasted in 30 seconds by Tua, almost getting knocked out in 30 seconds by freaking Bert Cooper, getting knocked out by Foreman YEARS after Cooney had been ... or was it the nights his trainer had to beg and plead with him to throw anything but just a jab because his opponents "had something wrong with them" and Moorer still wouldn't punch because he was afraid of getting hit back?

When was this Mythical Prime of Michael Moorer?

And how the hell was he going to solve the problem Cooney brought? Was he going to back into a corner against Cooney and slug it out with him? He wouldn't slug it out with Vaughn Bean.
