This was one of the dream matches that didn't happen. If I remember correctly the fight didn't take place because Dariusz didn't want to go to the U.S. and Jones didn't want to go to Germany. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Well! I heard that Jones didn't want to fight Michal in Germany because he's so worried about the judgement system.
Jones had to be the favorite and I believe he would have won in all likelihood, and may have even looked spectacularly brilliant! But at the same time, DM is underrated by man, and his style from like 97-99 may have given Roy issues. The shame of this is, that could have potentially turned out being a great rivalry, and if it wasn't, Roy WOULD have received a great deal of credit for the win. I'll take Roy on points, but a late DM stoppage is certainly in the realm of possibility (despite what some may claim). :smoke
That is basically the story. DM felt he was still the real champ since he held 3 of 4 major belts after defeating Hill and then was stripped due to politics so in his opinion RJJ should go to Germany and try to take his championship in the ring. Since RJJ didn't want to lose by "German decision", and DM had no interest to go into US only to take very risky fight the fight never materialized. I think prime RJJ would outpoint DM decisively, like most of his opponents... although at least DM forces him to work hard for his money. DM had good chin, stamina and recuperative powers, so IMO this fight would go distance.
Darius quit against Rocchigiani who was a solid, but basic, fighter. I can't see him beating any decent version of Jones.
Nobody can blame Roy for not wanting to go to Germany ten years ago. The judging was disgraceful! Some of Sven Ottke's wins were outrageous! According to Roy, HBO offered DM $5m to go to the U.S., but he turned it down on two occasions. DM was getting good money in Germany defending his belt, and I don't think he wanted to risk losing it. You would have thought that, because he'd been stripped of his belts, it would have made him determined to win them back, but that didn't seem the case. Roy had the WBA, IBF and the WBC belts, and DM had the WBO belt that wasn't that respected. Despite what had happened to DM, surely the onus was on him to go to Roy? That's my opinion. DM was content doing what he was doing. Regards, Loudon.
This is pretty much the way I see it.. I would have liked to seen them both try harder to make the fight happen though.. I certainly don't blame Jones for not wanting to go to Germany, where more than likely he wouldn't of had a fair shake, on a fight that would more than likely go the distance.
I agree. In a recent interview, Roy said he was confident of beating him, but he'd had his fingers burnt in Seoul. He also said, that he had 7 belts, and DM had the one, so the onus was on DM. I agree completely. If the figure of $5M is correct, then that was a lot money for DM to turn down in 2001. Regards, Loudon.
