That was a pretty bad quit there by Buster. He was winning the fight. Alot of people saw that fight as it was on Tyson's undercard. One of the reasons nobody gave him a chance vs Tyson.
Tucker was a durable heavyweight who wasn't quite top level.

Nothing like being a bit competitive with Tyson to make you overrated.

Nothing suggests Tucker would beat prime Holy. It could of course still happen, but there's no good reason to think so from what he know.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility, imo.
I do think Tucker would have beaten M Spinks if he hadn't been avoided.

Fair enough. When you said you didn't think he quit in the Tucker fight i thought you were disagreeing overall.

Tucker was whining because people were attributing Douglas quitting as a big part of why Tucker won.

Yeah. I'm not even sure if he did or didn't. I just don't really see it, to be fair.

This is the wrong thread for Roy's chin surely.

    Ah, I see.

    Fixed

Teach me to be replying in two threads at once past my teens.

Apparently Buster quit on his stool after 1 round with Bey.

For me he took a good shot and virtually stopped fighting against Tucker or certainly wasn't very interested. His father felt the same way. Buster said he learnt a lot from the stoppage and for me he might be hinting at staying in the game which he certainly did after getting dropped hard against Tyson. He didn't come close to hitting the mat vs TNT.

    Pearls of wisdom. :pipi

Tucker was 35-0 in 1987 and hadn't lost since the ams in 1978. And despite at times fighting to his opponent's level Tucker was an undefeated fighter with confidence and quite a bit of Emanuel Steward knowledge to boot.

Why do you hate Tyson so much? And be honest with yourself and those of the forum.

It’s possible. Tucker never risked much against his better opponents though. He didn’t fight to win against Tyson or Lewis. Only to survive. Buster Douglas was a relatively unknown fringe contender in 1987 and Tucker needed a come from behind win. The Norris and McCall fights were very close. Everyone else he beat was basically journeyman or trial horse level. Not sure id favor him against Evander even though an upset is possible

I think that window of 1985-1988 Tucker, with the right fights, could potentially develop into a champion fighter more than capable of beating Evander Holyfield.

Let’s look at whom Tucker fought from 1985 to 1988.

first off Tucker never fought at all in 1988.

Tucker only he had two fights in 1985 against non entities. Jaco and Crabtree.

Tony had four fights in 1986 against the kinds of guys he was expected to beat. Results that never really warned anyone Tucker could become a major player. Nothing stood out. Eddie Richardson, already knocked out by Tyson in just one round, he fought twice. First time Richardson went the distance with Tucker. Then Tony fought Otis Bates and James Broad.

1987 was the year Tucker shone. The Douglas and Tyson fights showed he could be a top elite fighter.

if Tucker was beating better fighters in 1985 and 1986 he could have been better in 1987.

But we can’t rate anyone on what didn’t happen.

    Nope.

For all his skills, the one thing Tucker never had was accuracy. Less than average. And that was against a bunch of flat footed stationary guys he had the reach on.

Facing Evander one thing needed is accuracy. Will not get your arm raised missing so much and Holyfield would counter him to death with all those missed punches. And getting clipped by Evander with counters would see Tucker going into his Joe Bugner impersonation.

Fought a lot of bums in the pros though, didn't he, to be fair.

I think Douglas was a good win for him. Apart from that, there's James Broad and Eddie Lopez and an old Jimmy Young as the highlights on his record, before the Tyson fight. Weak record.

Tucker was a decent fighter though, no question.

    Holyfield all day long. He
was cut from a different cloth to Tucker and was a fighter who could dig deep at elite level and win. Prime Holyfield (1989-92) is better in every department.
