Be honest with yourself. Cotto stops him. Brook is too fragil

Didnt he knock the guy out in a rematch? Seems to me it was likely a case of not taking the fight seriously. The outcome of the rematch, and his performances against much higher competition shows that the fight was a fluke, imo.

    ...

When I asked who has Cotto stopped, I was asking within the context of, who has he stopped that would suggest he would stop Brook. The group you named is great at creating the illusion of a revamped and resurging fighter, and creating momentum for a fighter making another run, but in actuality they dont carry a lot of weight in a discussion on how Cotto would do against quality opposition.

Geale was a D+ level fighter when Cotto stopped him, and would get stopped in two rounds in his very next fight against a fighter who is currently like 10-11 as a pro (10-1 at the time he stopped Geale). Then promptly retired.

The fact that the Mayorga that Cotto fought actually made it to the 12th round just gives credence to my point. This was a borderline shell of Mayorga, that near his prime had been stopped in 8 and 6 by past primes Trinidad and Hoya. This version, whose last significant win was a labored majority decision against a completely shot Fernando Vargas, should have never even made it to the 12th round against Cotto. This Mayorga was a C level fighter at best.

Light hitting Foreman, another C level fighter, went two rounds with Cotto after he tore his meniscus in the 7th round of their fight. Less than a year later he was getting finished in 6th by C level Wolak, who himself was not an exceptionally hard puncher.

My point here is that boxing is about levels, and Cotto stopping this group is practically meaningless in a fight against Brook.

    .....

Judah went 11 rounds, shot Mayorga went 12 rounds, Yuri Foreman went 9 rounds on a torn miniscus. Trout beat him over 12 rounds.

Clotteys physicality had him on the back foot. Margaritos physicality had him on the back foot.

But hes going to stop Brook?

Its just not practical to think that, imo.

This thread has reminded me how frustrating it is that we did not see Brook face more world class opposition pre ggg. I suspect he would handle Cotto in his prime and win, but as we did not see him truly tested at his peak it is hard to say. As much as I like Brook, I can’t help thinking he may have come up a little short in more world class fights. Not through skill but mentality.

Honestly the fighters you're discrediting Cotto for stopping, would be some of Brooks best wins of his career if they were on his resume. Brook hasn't really got that many stand out wins against recognizable names, apart from a very close win over Shawn Porter.

As for Clottey and Margarito ? they're not really comparable to Brook. Clottey fights behind a tight guard and is a counter puncher, Margarito is a non stop pressure fighter with an iron chin. Both men are ridiculously durable and huge at the weight and bigger than Brook also.

I don't think it's out of the question Cotto could wear down Brook with body punches and stop him late, Brook as i said hasn't really mixed it with many top names in his career and won.
