Weaver gave prime Holmes a lot of trouble although was ultimately defeated. Could Weaver perhaps trouble the Ali of 67 the way he troubled Larry Holmes?

No, I like Weaver and he could seriously punch plus he his power lasted the full 15 but prime Ali is a level above he should have little issue with Mike.

No, c'mon there's more to boxing than triangle theories

And who knows, Holmes probably just had an off night

It's hard to say how much trouble Weaver could give Ali ,he s not the most consistent guy . But he could rumble and hit .So at his best I'd say he gives Ali a few scary moment s and hss Angelo shouting at him to keep your hands up !!
Ali stops him in 14 is my pick .

Ali by late rounds stoppage while way ahead.

Holmes didn't use much lateral movement against Weaver. Ali would do so.

Weaver would be stumbling around within 7 rounds, and stopped in 9 at the latest.

If Holmes hadn't been sick as a dog (listen to his voice after the fight) and moronically underestimated Mike he would have tko'd him by seven.

Holmes at the time had started a dumb habit where he'd only really get up for the big fights (this was during his first year and a half as champ or so). You can see his foot work radically diminishing after the Norton fight as he found his own style.

Imagine the all-the-way-up-for-Ali Holmes against Weaver and the story completely changes. Could Weaver have taken that kind of punishment early? I don't see it.

1967 Ali would make mince meat of Mike.

Prime Ali probably could pick the rd . Weaver had a good left hook ( ask John Tate) and yes the punch that put Ali on his ass a few times was the left hook . But prime Ali (1965-1968) was miles above Weaver. The fight would be a beat down for any version of Mike Weaver.

Ali by stoppage around 8-12 while leading lopsidedly.

I followed this era of HWs pretty closely, and I don't think that's the case. Weaver gets somewhat underrated. In my view he is the best of the Other HW titlists in the Holmes era. It's no accident he held the WBA belt the longest, or that he gave Holmes one his tougher fights.

This said, Prime Ali toys with him and probably stops him late.

Weaver was inconsistent. He could really hit but usually took some time to get going. I think he's become (at his best) underrated through the years. You'd have to favour Ali quite heavily but Weaver is one of the guys who has the tools for the upset.

Ali by 5th round kayo. Too much for even the Weaver who fought Holmes.
