Prime Norton whoops Larry Holmes...Or no??

    Another post got me thinking.
Past prime Norton gave prime Larry Holmes all kinds of O mighty hell. 15 Rnds of it in 78.
Late in the day for Ken. He said after the dec to Ali in 76 that it tore his heart of of the game.
So its breaks down sure thing easy.
Prime 73 Norton would whoop Larry Holmes right?

    Thoughts.

How much stock shall we put in the Holmes bicep injury?

Was it just an excuse or is it legit?

Regardless, Norton would always give Larry big trouble I think.

I thought that was the big hitch, or asterisk, attached to this fight...

Perhaps just an excuse by the fans that's been exaggerated?

The Holmes that fought past his prime Norton in June '78 was not the same primed Holmes that beat Gerry Cooney, Renaldo Snipes, Leon Spinks or Randall "Tex" Cobb in 81' & 82'. Larry was still peaking when he fought and defeated a past prime Ken Norton.

Norton arguably won the 78 fight, when he was about 4-5 years past his peak, so NATURALLY the answer would be yes...

But the 2 heads up mano a mano PRIME FOR PRIME, in my opinion it would be a pick em 50-50 fight:huh:gsg:conf..

I would lean a little more towards Holmes, but wouldn't bet on it...:-(

No, I dont even think the Holmes Norton fight was that close to begin with. Never understood the people who say so or the people who think it was one of the great fights. Most of the fight was dominated by Holmes jab. Norton had some good rounds and the fight heated up late but for the most part Holmes in control. Either way I dont think Norton beats him. For whatever reason Norton had Ali's # thats his claim to fame. That and having the dubious honor of being the only heavyweight champion to have never won a championship bout.

I am not a big fan of the Norton style but he would have success over the Ali-Holmes type fighters because of his style-pressure. I would make sense that a primer Norton would do better against Holmes but are we assuming that Holmes was at his prime when they fought....I think Holmes-Norton is always a close fight give or take but give Larry the edge

I don't see really anyone 'whooping' a prime Larry Holmes. A prime Norton may beat him, but he sure isn't 'whooping' him.

Prime for prime versions of these men would have had a trilogy of bouts. All three being close. It would culminate in a 2 - 1 situation. I honestly could n't figure to which one, though. Maybe one of the fights would even yield a controversial result like Ken's third fight with Muhammad Ali.
