I don't think he would eat all of it because he can slip punches, but I agree Kelly would be able to back him up and tee off. Golovkin clearly sets up his combos quicker and easier than Pavlik though, which would allow him to throw his own heavy artillery at Kelly. A pretty exciting fight.

I was just thinking about this match-up last night. Props to you, thread starter, for making this topic. :good

This would be one hell of a fight.

Pavlik is about as 1 dimensional as it can get.
The amount of boxing skill differential is so massive you can hardly compare the 2.

Pavlik is bigger tougher, but too predictable. GGG, would win by UD.

Pavlik was a basic 1-1-2 fighter that had KO power and balls. Golovkin is head and shoulders above pavlik in terms of skills and thats due to golovkin's vast experience as an amateur.

When two punchers meet the guy who can take the other guy's stuff better is usually the one that comes out on top.

I love GGG but he's 5'9. The styles match-up is all wrong. Pavlik was a brutal puncher and had a very good chin. His jab was long and stiff and could control the fight and eventually his punches would have more of an affect on the much smaller GGG as he'd be punching down and GGG would be punching up, taking something off punches. A drunk Pavlik gave prime sergio his hardest fight. In his prime, I'd have to go with the ghost on that one.

Weird, I got the impression it was easier to get leverage punching upwards than punching downwards, purely because power from your legs comes out a lot easier when punching up.

Nope. It's a fact that's been discussed in lots of different places in the online boxing communities. Part of it is body mechanics, part of it is gravity and part of it is due to the plain simple fact that the distance and timing favors the taller man and thus its easier for him to catch the smaller man on the end of hi punches, where as the shorter guy generally has to reach more to connect.

Would be a helluva fight. A toss up in my book. GG the superior technician, wider variety, and better all around game. Pavlik with the size by a considerable margin, and proven body of work. Both can crack, and it seems both can take a punch.

Interesting, I thought gravity actually worked against taller fighters when they throw hard punches.

"its harder to punch down than up, if a fighter is 6ft 6ins punching down against a 5ft 11ins fighter who has to punch up, the taller fighters chin is just the right height at around 6ft for the smaller fighter to hit it with maximum power in his punch, whereas the taller fighter cannot get full leverage into a downward punch on the smaller fighters chin which will be around 5ft 5in."

" Getting punched or punching from a tall stace is much worse than with a lower stance. You have less balance and leverage tall, but kicks are much faster. In mt you can get away with standing up straight much more than in boxing or mma, mainly because of the scoring of punches resulting them not being thrown very often or very well. I say stay low in boxing and know how to change levels in kickboxing to suit your needs."

Make no mistake, this is a dangerous fight for G.

Pavlik at his best was a big, strong, very powerful middleweight who could take a punch and then deliver a huge one.

G gets hit. And if Pavlik was able to land enough, there could be a fight changing punch in there. Also, G would be the smaller man in there by a good margin, and I dont see him backing Kelly up early.

However, that all being said, Golovkin is overall, a better fighter, imo. And I think that while it would be competitive and maybe not as dominant as we are used to seeing G, that the overall package he brings would start to take over the fight. I think his body shots would be a huge key in this fight, and I think he winds up winning by UD.

You can't miss Pavlik...GG pulls back with his hands down.

    Who knows.

    They are both one dimensional.
What else can GG do but move foreward?

He is TERRIBLE off his back foot and pulls straight back with his hands down.
We all know what eventually happens to a guy that does that:deal

Pavlik is better off the back foot and you better not pull back with your hands down against him.

Pavlik was a YOUNG Champion with a resume far better than GG's.

GG doesn't even have an Edison Miranda level guy on his dance card.

It's hard to say if GG is REALLY an overall better fighter.

Pavlik was like 25 when he was Champ.

What was GG doing when he was 25?
    Who was he fighting?

    See what I mean.

Pavlik's level of comp is far superior.

Its hilarious how high GGG Is rated on the basis of fighting **** poor opposition. When he takes out a top guy in the division (ala Rigondaux schooling of Donaire), come back and have these discussions.
