Penalosa wins this. Where not even sure if Donaire gets pass montiel. Penalosa is bigger and has fought some heavy handed and skilled boxer. Personaly I think the jury is still out on donaire's chin.

why use a the result of a fight with montiel to gauge donaire's chances against gerry? two very different fighters and people could make the case that montiel is a better fighter than penalosa.

Is there any super fly/bantam who has a good chance of KOing Penalosa?

I'm talking every fighter, not just active ones.

    I nominate BoomBoom as Donaire's #1 hater.

Well it will definitely be a close fight considering that the only time Penalosa clearly lost IMO was against a much larger fighter in Juan Manuel Lopez, and even there he hit JML with a lot of good counters.

I think Donaire, even if a lot of people think of him as slick still has some gaps defensively which I think Penalosa can exploit. The thing is, Penalosa isn't all that active sometimes which would explain his close decision losses so if Donaire stays smart I think he can outpoint Gerry.

Whatever the result, I'm almost 100% sure that Gerry will not be knocked out.

I'm pretty sure JuanMa hits harder than Darchinyan H2H, so I'd still say no...

No. Penalosa seldom takes clean shots, and even when he did against a monster 126lbs puncher in Lopez, he took them very well. He's tough as old boots. I'd favor no Super Flyweight to stop him at his best.

I think Donaire/Penalosa would be an extremely boring affair. Penalosa is going to want to counter, and Donaire is going to want to use his long arms to keep Penalosa at a distance, but it's hard to hit Gerry with single shots. Could be another Penalosa/Choo.

If I was pushed, I'd favor Donaire...and I'm huge on GP.

we all now defense wise ..penalosa is an ace..however in his prime he had problems facing a taller and quicker opponent. he failed to capture the
crown of a taller japanese during his early years..he losses to ponce de leon
when poce begun to outbox him from a distance...donaire will give gerry
    a lot of problems..donaire by UD:patsch

    You've watched the Tokuyama fights?

I scored both in favor of Penalosa, one of them was particularly wide in my estimation. Let's keep in mind that the bouts took place in Japan, and both were close decisions, one being a split. Tokuyama was negative, he stayed on the outside and threw "pitty pat" shots all night long, sometimes throwing not with the intention on landing, but to get the attention of the judges. The cleaner shots were always landed by Gerry. On neutral ground, I'd expect Penalosa to have been awarded both decisions.

Again, have you watched these tall fighters he had problems with? They were negative, and knew as long as they didn't get knocked out, they were most likely going to get the decisions in their own backyard. That being said, Gerry can be lulled to sleep by tall, lanky jabbers. Donaire, although tall, is a very offensive fighter who likes to step in and rip with combination's. This could give him a lot of success, but it also opens him up to counters.

I thought the Ponce De Leon fight was a draw, and it was only competitive because Ponce was throwing close to a 100 punches a round. He was getting clowned in a lot of those rounds. This fight also took place at 122lbs and way past Penalosa's best. Not the best of measuring sticks.

Well its too early to tell as Donaires career is just starting up. But i guess Penalosa would win and might score a KO.. its a shame Gerry wasnt given a chance to fight Montiel. Im sure Fernando would have been koed.
