Yeah, that generation of heavyweights had both extremes. Page, Tubbs, Dokes had extensive amateur backgrounds, I think. Thomas and Witherspoon had hardly any. :good
Thomas could look like dog****, too. With only 21 fights in his career, can't really judge Pulev yet. My suspicion is that was a career scuttling beating he took from Wlad.
Pulev was outclassed vs Vlad but showed tremendous heart and landed some decent fights. Thomas had a great jab but was erratic, I thought he lost the Coetzee fight but it was a close draw. Pulev has impressed me vs the big guys. The fact is if Thomas had to fight Vlad the result may have been quicker or just as quick Vlad KO in 5 or sooner I think Pulev beats Pinklon
First of all I don't know why the assumption that Thomas would lose to Wlad "quicker" than Pulev would have any bearing on Thomas Vs Pulev. Looking better or worse against a common opponent is seldom an indication of anything. Secondly I disagree that a peak Thomas would lose faster to a 38 year old Wlad than Pulev did. Pinklon could box, had a good chin, great jab and was in good shape when well prepared, not to mention in his 20's when at the top of his game. Would you say that Pulev beating Alexander Ustinov or Tony Thompson was better than Thomas beating Witherspoon, Weaver or Tillis?
I think the Pulev wins were impressive in the way he executed, late KO's over Big men and a clear victory over Thompson. I was impressed with Thomas and his Jab may have been the best of the era but Witherspoon,Weaver and Tillis , Tillis was also Ko'd by Page in his next fight,Witherspoon fight was SD close and Tim never impressed me with his close SD wins or losses when he stepped up in class, Weaver had not looked good since 1983 and lost 3 of his 4 fights in 85-86 then KO'd by Johnny De Ploy in 88 but still a good scalp for Thomas and good KO I thought Thomas had an excellent chance to beat Holmes but as we know he started messing around with drugs again before Berbick With Pulev he is 6"4.5 246lbs, has shown some good skills and power before and he is a bronze medal winner so he has experience. It is hard to gauge right now. From the Vlad fight we know he has courage and takes a hell of a shot. I think the 80's had a bunch of guys struggling with each other and taking turns. Thomas looked to stand out in that era for me but as we know Tyson reset the bar and measuring stick on how good they all were. I think the future will tell us for certain but I suspect that Pulev may be better than he looked vs Vlad if he still wants it
Bro with all due respect you need to go back and check those fights out again. Regardless of Thomas vs Spoon being a split verdict the actual margin was much wider than Pulev vs Thompson. Pulev didn't look terribly impressive in that fight at all, and besides Tony was 42 and a career high 264 lbs. Ustinov and Dimitrenko were big men but very limited fighters. No way do any of these performances eclipse Thomas's win over Witherspoon or KO of Weaver.
I didn't say they eclipsed those wins but collectively they were impressive. Pulev does not have that dynamic style but Thompson was fresh from 2KO's over 6"8 David Price and had a win over Solis after so Thompson was a good win. I also like some earlier wins Pulev had over Rossy,Walker and Sprott,Vidoz and Skelton in the earlier stages of his career. I may be wrong but I think Povetkin and Pulev would do fine in the 80's until Tyson shows up.
pinklon thomas late stoppage. That guy had an AWESOME jab! His prime was very short, maybe 3 fights, but at that time he'd be a handful for anyone.
I agree with this. I think both Povetkin and Pulev would fair quite well or at least on par with many of the 1980-86 heavyweights before Tyson wrecked the division. None of those guys were consistent, they traded wins off each other rather frequently. No reason to believe Povetkin and Pulev wouldn't be able to secure several wins off that batch of contenders.
Pulev and Povetkin would probably be on the level of David Bey, James Broad, Larry Alexander, Jesse Ferguson in the 1980s, but they stay in better shape. I don't think they are on the level of Thomas or Witherspoon.
Povetkin might have done well in the 80's and perhaps even acquired an alphabet strap at one point or another. I disagree about Pulev however.
