Prime Quarry vs. Prime Norton

    I've thought about this one for awhile.
    I love Jerry and I'm not overly fond of Ken to say the least.
    Yes they fought in March of 75 on the Ali-Wepner closed-circuit undercard but, I think, Jerry was a last minute sub for Bonavena who bowed out (way to go Ken, risk your status against an aging, shot Ringo)
    With all of Jerry's problems at that time, maybe coke, maritial issues, lack of preparation, and being, basically shot by that time I don't factor that result into this.
    That being said I favor Norton in this one for the following reasons:
    The worst thing you could do against Quarry was to come right at him allowing him to utilize his superior counterpunching skills.
    Norton wouldn't do that.
    Jerry couldn't box; his several draws bear this out, heck even Chuvalo was jabbing him. Norton had a stiff jab.
    And I've said this before, Jerry's punch is a tad overrated; he had to wear down fighters. Unless he landed a bomb on Kenny, I don't see any Quarry stoppage. What top flight contender did Jerry ever KO or stop? Don't bring up the somewhat green Shavers (at the time) or Mac Foster or the overrated Spencer.
    I simply see Norton setting the tone with a jab and some big shots (which would stop Jerry in his tracks) and not falling into Jerry's traps.
    Norton UD. In 10 fights I see Norton at 7-3 or better...
    It hurts me to say this but I don't see Jerry getting the best of him. Bad style matchup, Ken refusing to get in a slugging match, and Jerry not having the 'bang' to get things done against a fighter that could be hurt by BIG sluggers which Jerry wasn't coupled with Norton's boxing skills (and size)

    I agree. Norton was bigger and overall better.

    Interesting how fighters "styles" create opinions who would win vs? Foreman bounces Norton off the canvass, but admits he didn't want to fight a prime Quarry.
    Quarry ko's Shavers in one, Shavers bombs out Norton in one. Norton is Ali's "equal", Ali beats up Quarry in seven. If Norton outjabs Quarry, then he probably wins in 8...otherwise Quarry stops Norton early.

    Ken Norton simply didn't match up well with big punchers. It is very likely that a vintage Jerry Quarry would take Norton out in short order.

    Yes. A prime for prime bout would be more competitive than their real one but Norton still takes Quarry inside the distance.


    Would be a good fight for two or three rounds.

    Doesn't seem like it, but Norton was actually 11 months younger than Ringo.

    Bonavena just started his career at 20, Ken at 24.

    And Quarry was the same age as Norton interestingly. Jerry turned pro in 65 at, I believe, 19. Two completely different career points when they met. Jerry going down, Ken going up.
    I was just thinking; Ken was turning pro at about the same time Jerry was fighting Frazier in MSG in 69.

    Back to thread. I disagree with several posters regarding Jerry's power; it's not overwhelming. And Foreman would have jabbed and busted Jerry up. Make no mistake, I do love Jerry!

    Prime vs Prime, I go with Quarry. Jerry actually did have very good boxing skills, see Lyle, Foster and Spencer fights. Jerry has not a very good jabber though. Quarry set counter punching traps very well and made his opponents pay dearly.

    I think you have to throw out the 75 Norton-Quarry fight, as Jerry had nothing left, no head movement, slow afoot, in very poor physical condition and overly shop worn. He simply tried to win the fight on toughness, and still troubled Norton, who may have been in his prime.

    I younger prime Quarry give a prime Norton a counter punching lesson.

    It would have been a hell of a lot more competitive .. didn't they spar once and Quarry hurt him ?

    I kinda like Norton here by decision. As noted, edge in the jab and that awkward style.

    Thry didn't spar once, they sparred all the time. A buddy of mine was a denizen of the Main St. gym where Ken and Jerry worked out of and he said Quarry got the better of him all the time, once even knocking him cold (Jerry was noted for being rough on sparring partners). Of course if you look at their careers on an arc, Jerry was beating up on a Ken that had not yet reached his prime, whereas Ken beat a Quarry past his prime. If I took Ken from the Quarry fight - which I think would be Ken's peak - and Jerry from the first Frazier fight I would go with Quarry in this scenario.
