Naturally its far easier to evaluate Mercers body of work at heavy than it is Haye's. Either way Mercer wins this violently.
Mercer was able to give a prime Lewis and Holyfield all they could handle. He also scored wins versus Morrison, Damiani, Cooper and Witherspoon. His chin, stamina, and power would suggest that he could beat Haye, who could possibly be drawn into a fire fight with Mercer.
I'm going to go with Mercer but that doesn't mean that Haye isn't going to change my mind as his career progresses.
It really depends on which Mercer shows up. Forget the one that fought Wlad, that Mercer was done. The one that beat Morrison and fought tough fights with a near prime Lewis and Holyfield would beat Haye. He would soak up anything Haye threw and walk him down before stopping him. But the one that looked lethargic when fighting Jesse Ferguson and Marion Wilson would lose a decision to Haye. I think we would get an "on" Mercer for this one and he stops Haye late. Either way, it would be an exciting fight.
That's just an easy way to dismiss the certain outcome of this poll. I'm a Klit fan, but we are talking about a This content is protected This content is protected here, a guy with a more than granite chin and serious power! I think it would even be a toss-up against current Wlad, so that's not why most people here are voting for Ray.
Exactly. A prime Mercer was a former gold medalist who was possessed of pretty fast hands, solid skills, stamina, a great chin, and power.
Mercer, definately. Very tough, threw a lot of punches, always in a guys face and would walk through a lot of punishment. Basically the guy knew how to instigate a real fight, and he wins one every time with Haye.
Ray Mercer, at his best, could probably beat anybody around today. The whole Haye phenomena isn't because Haye is extraordinary. It's because everyone else is sub par. Even Haye himself admits as much when he goes on about how heavyweights today are slow and fat. He's right. In a division full of guys who first picked up boxing gloves in their 20's,, who only box because they failed at other sports, who don't train hard, who come into fights overweight..it's not a big mystery that the top three guys are the ones who bother to show up in shape, and actually started fighting from their youth. That used to be the norm, but now it's enough to make you a top dog.
Well the Klitschkos, Chagaev, Povetkin, Haye, Boytsov, and Chambers are all guys that have boxed since they were in their teens.
Ray Mercer, zero question in my mind. He had all the tools and attributes needed to knock somebody like Haye out.
