At 175 there are a few. Foster and Moore spring to mind as locks. Langford (my #1 at the weight) & Kid Norfolk would both be excellent choices at the weight. I pick him to beat my #2 at the weight, Ezzard Charles. At 160 he's beatable by many but none are a serios favourite over him in my view. This guy in my avatar, Tiger Flowers, would make a very good fight for him. Many will guess at Greb, too of course.
I think that at 175 you have people like Bob Foster and Billy Conn, that would have given him a run for his money.
Im not sure. I would have liked to see Jones fight Monzon with his long jab and great right hand, and I would've liked to see how he did against a swarming Harry Greb who was good enough to beat Gene Tunney once. Calzaghe and his awkward southpaw stance may have been interesting too.
Five of the top guys at LHW: 1 - Sam Langford. I think he would knock Jones out. 2 - Ezzard Charles. I think Jones could mess up his rhthym, hurt him and dominate the later rounds for a close but clear decision. 3 - Archie Moore. I think the all time KO king at peak would get Jones. Heavy hands, great smarts, just what's needed. 4 - Gene Tunney. Maybe the most fascinating fight. I think I'd pick Jones in a close decision. 5 - Bob Foster. Foster would KO Jones, long, lazer guided right hand, he's just the right man. I think he would beat Jones for something like 5/5. And at Middle: 1 - Carlos Monzon. I think this one would go to points and I think it could go either way. One of those decisions that nobody could ever agree upon who had really won. Wouldn't like to guess at who would take the 2/3 2 - Dick Tiger. Jones by clear decision. 3 - Harry Greb. Who know? But Greb on paper has the perfect style to beat Jones. Granite jaw, lightning fast, no fear, massive, massive work-rate and punch output. No power though. Could Jones make that work for him? 4 - Charley Burley. Jones wins a close decision. 5 - Marvin Hagler. I think Jones could get around the corner on Hagler, frustrate him and hurt him. People maybe forget how powerful Jones was at this weight - tight points decision Jones.
The young version gets his head handed to him. See the Burley fight for details. The older guy is exactly the type of "Find a way" fighter i'd pick to get the job done shold my life depend on it.
At 175 Charles, Moore, Foster, Spinks, and Tunney all KO Roy Jones. Roy does not have the toughness or Chin to hang with those guys in a dog fight.
Prime Roy was a freak of nature and is vastly underrated because of his losses to Tarver and Johnson when he got older and had to lose 25 pounds of muscle. The only reason I made this thread is to show how overrated old fighters are. Yes they are LEGENDS but they never fought anyone like Roy Jones.
Good list with solid reasoning, but I question Charley Burley. From the limited footage I've seen of him and everything I've read Burley liked to throw one punch at a time. Its said his accuracy was uncanny, but do you really think he could keep the decision close against a man like Jones with those incredible reflexes?
