Hell, if Berbick could beat Ali, surely there are a number of Heavyweights that could beat him? Hell, if McBride beat Tyson, man, so many that could beat him. And seriously, if Pender could beat Robinson, I just can'timagine how many MW's could beat him.
Based on footage of Tunney, you think he takes him out, or based on word of mouth? Because based on footage, certainly not.
This is not true at all. I think you made that decision early and decided to stick with it. If you look at it more closely, and view footage of him at the weight, this point of view doesn't hold, especially when you rate him as high as you do at SMW. His fight with Toney(arguably his best performance) was his first at the weight, just after moving up from MW, so it's fair to say there was no big jump in experience between one fight for him to dominate a guy of Toney's caliber like that.
Monzon, Hagler and Fittsimmons would be three possible losses for Roy. At Light heavyweight I think Archie Moore and Tunney. Possibly Moorer and Spinks.
Moore and Tunney, no. Fitzsimmons has about as good a chance of beating Jones as I do, just with a bigger punch.
Moore was awesome. He would whip old Roy boy. Fittsimmons was a 3 division champ. He would beat Roy and Tunney is a great boxer. Very underrated. Tunney was 81-1-3 and his only loss was to Hary Grebb, but he would later draw and beat Harry Grebb. Grebb might've beaten Roy also.
Great points! I'm sorry for ever arguing. The "Moore was awesome. He would whip old Roy boy" bit really explained things and showed me where I was wrong. On the serious side, Jones would make Moore look like Toney. Moore was better than Toney, but this style matchup is almost EXACTLY the same. Toney was slicker and quicker than Moore, and better defensively, while Moore had a better punch. Either way, relying on countering, while staying stationary, is the worst thing you can do against a super fast in and out pot shotter. Watch Fitzsimmons on film, and then come back and apologize. Great for his era, nothing in the modern one, unless he was taken out and taught modern techniques. Jones was a 4 division champ just for your info as well. Tunney was great for his time(and much better than Fitz) but still not as good as someone like Roy. Again, the differences on film are obvious.
Apology accepted. Hey remember re:Fittsimmons. There were only Middleweight, Lightheavyweight and Heavyweight back then and only one world champ per division. Fittsimmons owned all three belts at the same time. That is a greater accomplishment than Roy. Although Roy was the undisiputed LightHeavyweight Champ. Also re: Tunney the man was never knocked out because his chin and defense were top notch.
Fitzsimmons is how it's spelled, and he didn't hold all 3 belts simultaneously, he won them at different stages of his career. Either way, doesn't detract from the fact that(while likely a higher ATG due to accomplishments for his era) he wasn't as skilled as guy like Jones, or many that came after him.
You've said that in every single post involving a fantasy matchup with Jones, providing no analysis or thoughtful point of view. You don't even put an "a" in between "is" and "legend" and you act like boxing begins and ends with Roy Jones. Shut the **** up.
Spinks is the only fighter off that list I would favor over Roy at 175. Spinks was a crafty son of a *****, he had great power at this weight, very quick, good defense. He was a big Lt. Heavy with a nice reach. I think he could set Roy up for that Jinx to land but it would take him a while. Spinks by 11th round KO, while behind by 2 points coming into the 11th.
